• 5 to 7 days is the comfortable length with children or parents; shorter trips mean long drives every day.
• Fewer hotel changes: look at the nights split on each card. A Srinagar base with day trips to Gulmarg is easiest with young kids.
• Family rooms: ask for interconnecting or family rooms when you enquire; several packages include them.
• Meals: 48 of 53 packages include breakfast and dinner, so you only pay for lunch on the road.
• Snow for kids: December to March in Gulmarg; in summer, Thajiwas glacier at Sonamarg still has snow.

Included: hotel or houseboat stays (sample hotels named on every card, or similar), a private cab for airport or railway transfers and all sightseeing with parking, tolls and driver allowance, breakfast and dinner on 48 of 53 packages, and GST on 53 of 53.

Usually not included: flights or train fare to Srinagar, lunch, Gulmarg Gondola tickets, pony, ATV and snow-activity charges, entry fees and travel insurance. Each package page lists its own inclusions and exclusions.

• Breakfast and dinner are included on most family packages (see each card). Hotels serve North Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, so a vegetarian family eats well everywhere.
• Jain food or no-onion, no-garlic meals: tell us when you book and we confirm with each hotel before you travel, in writing.
• For small children: hot water, milk and plain khichdi or dal-rice are easy to get at hotels; carry any formula or baby food your child is used to.
• Try Kashmiri food: kahwa, noon chai and a Wazwan meal are the local specialities; our Kashmir Food Trail builds them into the trip.

• Altitude: Srinagar is at about 1,600 m and Gulmarg at 2,650 m, so most families feel no altitude effect. Gondola Phase 2 (3,979 m) is the one place to go slowly with small children and anyone with a heart or breathing condition.
• Hills and bends: the roads to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam wind; carry motion-sickness medicine and ask the driver to stop when needed. Your cab is private, so stops are your call.
• Medical help: Srinagar has the main hospitals (SMHS and SKIMS) and pharmacies are in every town; carry your children's regular medicines.
• Cold: evenings are cool even in summer and below freezing in winter. Ask us to confirm room heating at each hotel for winter dates, and for extra blankets or a heater.
