There is no single best time to visit Kashmir, only the best time for the Kashmir you want to see. The valley runs through four distinct seasons, and each rearranges the landscape completely: the same meadow that is a wildflower carpet in June is a ski slope in January. Deciding when to go is really deciding which Kashmir you are after.
This guide breaks the year down season by season and month by month, with the weather, the highlights, and the trade-offs of crowds and cost, so you can time your trip to what matters most to you.

Month by month in Kashmir
March to April - spring and the tulip bloom
Winter thaws, almond and cherry blossom appear, and for a few weeks from late March into April, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, the largest in Asia, opens with over a million tulips. Days are mild, crowds are lighter, and rates are lower than peak summer. Carry a light jacket for the mornings.
May to June - peak summer
The classic postcard season. Meadows are green, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are fully open, and the weather is at its most reliable. This is also the busiest and priciest window, and hotels and gondola tickets sell out. Book at least four to six weeks ahead.
July to August - summer and monsoon fringe
Warm and green, with occasional rain as the monsoon brushes the region. Good value between the two peak windows, and a fine time for the higher valleys and treks like the Kashmir Great Lakes.
September to October - autumn
A quiet favourite. The chinar leaves turn crimson and gold, the light is superb, the weather is stable, and rates ease off. Arguably the most photogenic time to visit, and less crowded than summer.
November to February - winter and snow
Cold sets in, and by December Gulmarg is under snow and open for skiing (reliable January to March). Srinagar and Dal Lake under snow are magical, houseboats are cosy with bukhari heaters, and some high roads to Sonamarg close. Pack heavy woollens and waterproof boots.
When to visit for specific experiences
- Tulip garden: Late March to mid-April (the bloom lasts only a few weeks).
- Snow and skiing: December to March, centred on Gulmarg.
- Green meadows and full access: May to August.
- Autumn colours and photography: Late September to early November.
- Fewer crowds and better rates: March, September, and October.
- Amarnath Yatra: The pilgrimage runs in summer (typically July to August).

If you want one window that balances weather, access, cost, and crowds, aim for the second half of April or the first half of October. You get stable conditions, full access to the main destinations, and none of the peak-season crush.
