Quick Answer
Bhaderwah is a town at about 1,613 m in Doda district, in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir, often called "Chota Kashmir". From Jammu it is about 200 km, 6 to 7 hours, via Udhampur, Batote and Pul Doda (Batote to Pul Doda 50 km, Pul Doda to Bhaderwah 30 km). The main sights are the Padri and Guldanda meadows on the road towards Chamba, Jai valley about 30 km away, and the Vasuki Nag temple in town. No permit is needed. Summer (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best times; heavy snow closes Padri and Guldanda in winter.
Bhaderwah sits in a bowl of deodar and fir forest in the Chenab basin, a long way from the Kashmir valley but very like it, which is how it got its nickname. Most visitors come for the high meadows above town, the cool summers and the temples. It is also on the road to Himachal: the route over Guldanda and Padri continues to Chamba.
How to reach Bhaderwah
| From | Distance | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Jammu | About 200 km, 6 to 7 hours | Udhampur, Batote (NH44), Pul Doda, Bhaderwah |
| Srinagar | About 250 km, 7 to 8 hours | Banihal tunnel, Ramban, Batote, Pul Doda |
| Batote | 80 km | Batote to Pul Doda 50 km, then 30 km to Bhaderwah |
Approximate. Landslides on the Ramban and Doda roads can add hours in the monsoon.
The nearest airport and main railhead is Jammu. Buses and shared taxis run from Jammu and Doda, but a private cab makes it easy to add the meadows, which have no regular transport.
Places to see around Bhaderwah
- Padri: a high meadow and pass on the Bhaderwah-Chamba road, about 30 to 40 km from town and roughly 3,100 to 3,200 m high. Snow play into early summer, flowers in July and August.
- Guldanda: a meadow at about 9,550 ft on the same road, below Padri. It gets the first snow of the season and is a favourite day trip.
- Jai valley: a broad meadow valley at about 2,400 m, roughly 30 km from Bhaderwah via Chinta, with streams and forest edges for picnics.
- Vasuki Nag temple: the old stone temple in Bhaderwah town, dedicated to the serpent deity Vasuki.
- Kailash Kund (Kablas): a high lake above the valley, reached on foot in the summer yatra.
- Chinta valley: farms and forest on the road to Jai, where Bhaderwah rajmash is grown alongside maize.
Bhaderwah rajmash and local festivals
Bhaderwah rajmash, a small red kidney bean with a sweet, nutty taste, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in August 2023. Buy it in town from shops that sell local produce; it is the one thing almost every visitor takes home.
- Mela Patt: Bhaderwah's best-known festival, held on Naga Panchami.
- Subar Dhar mela: a hill fair held in the summer months.
Best time to visit Bhaderwah
- April to June: pleasant days in town and meadows opening up; the busiest season.
- July and August: green and flowering, but monsoon landslides on the roads.
- September and October: clear skies and autumn colour; often the best weather.
- December to February: snow in town; Guldanda and Padri roads close after heavy falls.
