Tourism here is not built around a single monument. It is built around landscape and experience: a shikara gliding through lotus gardens, a gondola rising into the snow, a horseback ride to a meadow you cannot reach any other way.

Top places to visit in Kashmir
Srinagar and Dal Lake
The summer capital and the heart of Kashmir tourism. Dal Lake, its houseboats and floating gardens, the Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar, the old city, and the hilltop Shankaracharya temple. Most trips begin and end here.
Gulmarg
A meadow of flowers in summer and a serious ski resort in winter. The Gulmarg Gondola is among the highest cable cars in the world, lifting you to Apharwat peak at nearly 4,000 metres. Home to one of Asia's highest golf courses too.
Pahalgam
The valley of shepherds, set where the Lidder river runs cold and clear. Base for Betaab Valley, Aru, Chandanwari, and the Amarnath pilgrimage. The most restful of the major destinations.
Sonamarg
The meadow of gold, gateway to the Thajiwas glacier and the high road toward Ladakh. Raw, high-alpine, and best in summer when the passes are open.
Beyond the four
For repeat visitors: Doodhpathri's open pastures, Yusmarg's quiet meadows, the Gurez Valley near the Line of Control, and the saffron fields of Pampore in bloom each autumn.

For the widest access with reliable weather, late April to June and September to October are the safest windows. For snow, come between December and February and centre the trip on Gulmarg.

Getting there and getting around
Srinagar International Airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other metros. By road, the Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH 44) connects the valley to the rest of India. Within Kashmir, the practical way to travel is a private cab with a local driver, since destinations are spread across mountain roads and public transport is limited for tourists.
