Overview

Baramulla (Varmul) is one of the oldest towns in Kashmir, set on both banks of the Jhelum river in the north-west of the valley. Historically it was the main gateway to Kashmir on the old road toward Muzaffarabad. Today it is a district headquarters and a junction for Gulmarg (via Tangmarg), Sopore, and the Uri road. Its riverfront old town and bridges give it a distinct character.
