Open ten browser tabs for "Kashmir tour package" and you will find hundreds of sellers. Most are not actually in Kashmir. A fair number are one Delhi or Mumbai office subcontracting your entire trip to a local operator you will never speak to and never get to vet - meaning you pay full retail for a game of operational telephone.
This page is not going to pretend every travel agent is out to get you, or that every OTA is running a scam. Most are perfectly professional businesses solving a different problem than the one an actual Kashmir trip presents. What follows is an honest, occasionally funny, fully factual breakdown of where that gap usually shows up, and where Via Kashmir sits differently in that landscape - written so you can fact-check every claim in it, because we would rather be boring and accurate than punchy and in a legal letter.
A note on fairness
Nothing on this page names a specific company, because we are not interested in a fight over marketing copy. Every comparison below describes a general, widely documented industry pattern - being based outside Kashmir, subcontracting local operations, or selling Kashmir as one SKU among thousands - not an accusation against any one business. Fair is fair, even when we are the ones telling the joke.
The three kinds of Kashmir seller (and what each is actually built for)
Before comparing ourselves to anyone, it helps to be honest about the landscape - because "travel agent" and "OTA" are not one category, and neither loses to us just because we are cheerful about Kashmir.
- checkThe neighbourhood travel agent. Often genuinely excellent at Shimla, Manali, Goa or a Bangkok package, because that is where their volume and relationships actually sit. Kashmir has a slide in their brochure; it rarely has a recent visit behind it.
- checkThe national OTA app. Very good at comparing flight fares and star ratings at scale, across the entire country. Kashmir is one destination tile among hundreds, run through the same generic booking flow as a stay in Ooty, with no one on staff whose actual job is to have personally checked whether that specific Dal Lake houseboat still looks like its listing photo this season.
- checkA Kashmir-only, Kashmir-based operator. The category we deliberately chose to be. A smaller catalogue by definition, because "everywhere" and "personally verified" are opposite design goals, and we picked the second one on purpose.
The trade-off we made, out loud
Specialising in one place means we cannot also sell you a Bali package next to it. We are entirely fine with that trade, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Via Kashmir vs a traditional agent vs a national OTA - the honest table
| Via Kashmir | Typical local/traditional agent | Typical national OTA | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physically based in Kashmir | Yes - Srinagar HQ | Usually not - Kashmir is one destination among many they sell | No - a nationwide platform, not a destination specialist |
| Verifies the actual room or houseboat you book | Every listing personally inspected by our own team | Often relies on a subcontracted local handler's word | Relies on host-submitted photos and self-reported star ratings |
| Who answers when a road closes for snow | One named Srinagar coordinator, reachable on WhatsApp | The agent themself or a call centre, in business hours | A support ticket queue, often without local weather context |
| Pricing shown up front | All-inclusive quote, gondola and entry fees included | Varies by agent - some costs added once you are on the ground | Headline price often excludes taxes and fees shown late at checkout |
| Cancellation flexibility | Free cancellation on most bookings | Depends entirely on that individual agent's own policy | A platform-wide policy, rarely tailored to Kashmir's weather-driven cancellations |
| What the business is actually optimised for | One destination, done properly | Volume across many destinations | Scale across the entire country |
Rows describe common, widely reported industry patterns Via Kashmir was structured to avoid - not a claim about any named competitor.
Built for every kind of Kashmir traveller
Family vacation
Kashmir with parents, kids, or both at once has its own logistics - a verified family-sized room instead of two singles pushed together and called a "family room," a coordinator who actually answers a 9pm WhatsApp message about altitude and a tired toddler, and an itinerary paced for nap schedules rather than an influencer's shot list.
Solo trip
Travelling alone means your safety net is whoever you booked with, not a group splitting the logistics. You get one named coordinator who knows exactly where you are meant to be each day, a stay that has actually been walked through by a real person - not a stranger's living room shot with a wide-angle lens - and check-ins that feel like a friend confirming plans, not a company covering itself.
Honeymoon
A honeymoon houseboat photo can be staged once and never visited again. Ours are inspected in person, every season, specifically because a couple's one Dal Lake night deserves to match the picture that sold it - "romantic surprise" should describe the view, not the plumbing.
Group tour
Groups are exactly where hidden per-head markups tend to live - a "group discount" that quietly evaporates once everyone is asked to settle up separately at the counter. Our group pricing is quoted per person, in writing, before anyone boards a flight, and it is the same number when you land.
Friends' trip
A trip with friends survives or dies on one thing: nobody wants to be the person chasing a refund from a WhatsApp number that has stopped replying. One coordinator, one itinerary, one quote everyone can see - so the only argument left on the trip is whose turn it was to pack the power bank.
Common Kashmir trip patterns worth knowing about, and what we do instead
None of this is unique to any single operator - these are widely reported friction points on Kashmir trips generally, useful for evaluating any operator you book with, including us.
- checkThe "your hotel is full, come to my cousin's place" switch. A commonly reported on-ground pattern where a booked property is claimed to be full at arrival and you are redirected somewhere the driver or handler has a relationship with. We pre-confirm every booking directly with the property before your trip, so there is no unbooked "cousin's place" to redirect you to.
- checkThe mandatory "handicraft emporium" stop. Itineraries padded with a shopping detour that pays the driver or agent a commission, at the cost of your actual sightseeing time. Our itineraries are built around what you asked for; any shopping stop is opt-in, never scheduled by default.
- checkThe on-the-spot "gondola line-skip fee." Extra cash requested at a ticket counter for a shorter queue. Gondola and other entry fees are quoted and paid for up front in your package, so there is nothing left to negotiate at the counter.
- checkThe "final price" that grows after you land. A quote that excludes taxes, a fuel surcharge, or a "peak season adjustment" until you are already in Kashmir. Our quotes are all-inclusive from the first message, and we will match a lower verified, like-for-like price you find elsewhere.
