7-Day Kashmir Itinerary - Day-by-Day Plan
Arrive Srinagar - Dal Lake Evening
Arrive at Srinagar International Airport. Check in to your houseboat or hotel on Dal Lake. Evening: private shikara ride on Dal Lake (1.5 hours). Sunset from the shikara is the single most photographed moment in Kashmir - arrive at the lake by 5:30pm. Dinner at Boulevard Road or onboard if staying on a houseboat.
Srinagar Sightseeing
Morning: Mughal Gardens - Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi. Afternoon: Shankaracharya Temple (best panoramic view of Dal Lake - 243 stone steps, allow 1 hour), Hazratbal Shrine, and the old city spice market near Lal Chowk. Evening: free time on Boulevard Road.
Gulmarg Day Trip
Depart Srinagar at 8am. Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (Kongdori) - ₹840/person, buy at counter, arrive early. Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (4,200m altitude) for those who want snow: ₹980 additional. Return to Srinagar by 6pm. Tip: carry a jacket regardless of season - temperatures at Kongdori stay below 12°C year-round.
Srinagar to Pahalgam - Overnight
Depart Srinagar at 9am. Stop at Awantipora ruins (en route, 30 minutes). Arrive Pahalgam by noon. Betaab Valley (12km further from Pahalgam town) in the afternoon - named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here. Overnight stay in Pahalgam.
Pahalgam - Baisaran Meadows
Morning: Baisaran meadows by horse (10-minute ride from town) - sometimes called 'mini-Switzerland' for its pine-ringed open grasslands at 2,440m altitude. Afternoon: trout fishing at Lidder River (rods available for hire from local operators, ₹300/hour), or leisure in the town bazaar. Evening: bonfire arrangements available through ViaKashmir.
Sonamarg Day Trip
Early departure from Pahalgam via Srinagar to Sonamarg. Thajiwas Glacier by pony from Sonamarg town - ₹300-400 one way, or walk it in 45 minutes if fit. Sonamarg means Meadow of Gold - the valley floor in summer is exactly that. Return to Srinagar by evening.
Departure Day
Morning: last shikara ride or floating vegetable market visit (starts at 6am on Dal Lake - the only floating market of its kind in India, operating since the Mughal period). Check out by 11am. Transfer to Srinagar Airport. Direct flight connections to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore operate throughout the day.
