Quick Answer

Hanle, India's first Dark Sky Reserve: the observatory, stargazing season, homestays, the drive from Leh, the road over Umling La and the permits you need.

Hanle lies in the Changthang plateau of south-eastern Ladakh at about 4,300 m, roughly 255 km from Leh. It is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory on Mount Saraswati and, since 2022, to India's first Dark Sky Reserve, created to protect its night sky from light pollution. Local homestays run stargazing sessions, and some villagers are trained as astronomy ambassadors with telescopes.

Quick answer

Hanle is about 255 km from Leh (7 to 8 hours) via Upshi, Chumathang and Nyoma. Stay at least two nights in a homestay for stargazing; nights around the new moon are darkest. Umling La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world, lies beyond Hanle. Protected-area permits apply; foreigners face extra restrictions.

Stargazing in Hanle

  • Plan around the new moon for the darkest skies; a full moon washes out faint stars.
  • Winter skies are clearest but nights are extremely cold; summer is more comfortable.
  • Homestays and astronomy guides offer telescope sessions; ask when booking.
  • Use red torches only and do not shine car headlights over the reserve at night.
  • The observatory itself is a research site; public access is limited.

Umling La

The Border Roads Organisation built a road over Umling La at about 5,800 m, which it describes as the highest motorable road in the world. It lies beyond Hanle towards Chisumle and Demchok. Access depends on current permit rules and road status, and the altitude is extreme: go only after full acclimatisation, spend very little time at the top, and travel with an experienced local driver.

Permits and access

Indian citizens register online and pay the Ladakh environment and wildlife fees before visiting protected areas such as Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through a registered agent. Rules and fees change, so check our permits guide before you travel.

Areas around Hanle are close to the border, and rules for foreign nationals are stricter than for other protected areas. Check the current status before you plan.

Altitude

Leh sits at about 3,500 m. Spend your first 36 to 48 hours resting in Leh before going higher, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should ask their doctor before travelling.
