Quick Answer
Wayil (also spelt Wayul or Wail) is a village in Ganderbal district on the Sindh river, about 9 km beyond Ganderbal town and 30 km north-east of Srinagar, roughly an hour by road on NH1D, the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway. At about 1,678 m, it is known for riverside picnics, its suspension bridge, trout and as a starting point for treks to Mohanmarg and Laarmarg. The current is fast and cold: the authorities post warnings against bathing, so enjoy it from the bank.
Wayil is where the Sindh comes out of its valley in two channels, close enough to the city that Srinagar families drive up for an afternoon by the water. For visitors it is the first good riverside stop on the Sonamarg road, worth half an hour on the way out or a slower lunch on the way back.
How to reach Wayil
| From | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar (city centre) | About 30 km | About 1 hour |
| Ganderbal town | About 9 km | About 15 to 20 minutes |
| Sonamarg | About 50 km | About 1.5 to 2 hours |
Approximate. Weekend traffic out of Srinagar adds time.
Wayil is on the main Srinagar-Sonamarg road, before Kangan, so any Sonamarg cab passes it. Local buses and shared cabs run from Srinagar to Ganderbal and Kangan.
Things to do at Wayil
- A picnic by the Sindh: what most visitors come for. Choose a spot on the bank where the current slows, under the trees.
- The suspension bridge: a short footbridge over the river and a popular photo stop.
- Trout: the Sindh is a trout stream. Angling needs a licence from the J&K Fisheries Department.
- Treks: Wayil is a starting point for the alpine meadows of Mohanmarg and Laarmarg, and lies on the road to Naranag, the base of the Naranag Gangbal trek.
- Ganderbal nearby: more places around the district in the Ganderbal guide.
Safety at the river
The Sindh at Wayil looks inviting on a hot day, but it is fed by snowmelt: very cold, fast and deeper than it looks. There have been drownings, and the authorities have put up warning signs against bathing and taking photos close to the water.
- Do not bathe or wade beyond your ankles, and keep children well back from the edge.
- Do not climb on rocks in the current for photos.
- Water levels rise in the afternoon in early summer as the snow melts higher up.
Keep Wayil clean
Wayil does not fall under a municipal body, so there is no regular rubbish collection, and litter after busy weekends is a real problem. Carry a bag and take your waste back with you.
Best time to visit Wayil
- April to June: green banks and a full river; the busiest picnic season.
- July and August: warm days by the water, crowded at weekends.
- September to November: autumn colour and fewer people.
- Winter: cold and quiet, with snow higher up the valley; the Sonamarg road beyond can be affected by snow.
Weekday mornings are the calmest.
