Quick Answer

Planning a Ladakh bike trip: Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh routes, renting a bike in Leh, the rules on bikes from outside Ladakh, permits, fuel stops, altitude and what to carry.

A motorcycle trip across Ladakh is a dream for many Indian riders: Khardung La, Chang La, the Pangong shore and the long Manali highway over Tanglang La. It is also demanding. Roads range from smooth tarmac to broken gravel and water crossings, fuel stops are far apart, weather changes fast and the altitude affects both rider and engine.

Quick answer

Most riders rent a bike in Leh after 2 to 3 days of acclimatisation, then ride Khardung La to Nubra, Shyok to Pangong and back via Chang La over 5 to 7 days. Season: June to September. Rules on bikes rented outside Ladakh change and are sometimes restricted for local sightseeing, so check before you arrive with one.

Renting a bike in Leh

  • Leh has many rental shops for Royal Enfields, Himalayans and smaller bikes.
  • Check brakes, tyres, chain and the documents (registration, insurance, permit to ride on those routes).
  • Ask what tools and spares are included and what happens if the bike breaks down far from Leh.
  • Rentals usually require ID and a deposit; read the damage terms.

Fuel, permits and safety

  • Fuel in Leh, Diskit, Karu and a few other points; carry a spare can on long legs.
  • Indian citizens register online and pay the Ladakh environment and wildlife fees before visiting protected areas such as Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through a registered agent. Rules and fees change, so check our permits guide before you travel.
  • Wear a full-face helmet, riding jacket, gloves and boots; carry rain gear.
  • Start early: river crossings rise in the afternoon with snowmelt.
  • Never ride after dark on mountain roads.
  • Leh sits at about 3,500 m. Spend your first 36 to 48 hours resting in Leh before going higher, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should ask their doctor before travelling.

Prefer a car?

Many groups ride part of the way and keep a backup car, or travel by car with a driver who knows the passes. See our Srinagar to Leh taxi page for the long route.
