Quick Answer

Tulail (also spelt Tilel) is the eastern part of the Gurez valley in Bandipora district, about 40 km beyond Dawar along the Kishanganga river. Badugam is its main village; Burnai, Badoab, Niru and Sheikhpora are on the way, and Chakwali is the last village visitors can reach. Indian visitors need no permit but must show original photo ID at the army checkpoints at Tragbal, Razdan Pass and Dawar. Tulail is reachable only while Razdan Pass is open, roughly June to October, and is best done as a full-day trip from Dawar.

Most Gurez visitors stay around Dawar and Habba Khatoon peak. Tulail is the reward for going further: a narrower valley of wooden houses, small fields and the Kishanganga running fast beside the road. There are no hotels to speak of and very few shops, which is exactly the appeal.

How to reach Tulail

LegDistanceNotes
Srinagar to DawarAbout 140 km, 5 to 6 hoursVia Bandipora and Razdan Pass
Dawar to BadugamAbout 40 km, 1.5 to 2.5 hoursAlong the Kishanganga; road quality varies

Approximate. Plan Tulail as a full day out and back from Dawar.

Use a local Gurez cab for the Tulail day; the road is narrow, and drivers know which stretches are open. Carry original photo ID for every traveller.

Villages and what to see

  • Badugam: the main village of Tulail.
  • Sheikhpora, Niru, Burnai and Badoab: log-built villages and fields on the drive in.
  • The Kishanganga: riverside stops along the whole road.
  • Chakwali: the furthest village open to visitors, near the Line of Control. Follow army instructions on photography.

Best time to visit Tulail

  • June: the pass reopens; snow still on the high slopes.
  • July and August: green fields and the warmest days.
  • September and early October: clear skies and harvest colours; often the best time.
  • November to May: Razdan Pass is usually closed by snow.
