Quick Answer

Zanskar, Ladakh's most remote valley: the drive from Kargil over Pensi La, Padum, Drang-Drung glacier, Karsha and Phugtal monasteries, the Shinku La road and best season.

Zanskar is a high, remote valley in south-western Ladakh, enclosed by the Great Himalaya and Zanskar ranges. Its main town, Padum, sits at about 3,600 m. For centuries the valley was reached only by trekking, and in winter the frozen Zanskar river (the Chadar) was its lifeline. Today a road crosses from Kargil over Pensi La, and a newer road links Padum to Darcha in Lahaul over Shinku La.

Quick answer

Zanskar is reached from Kargil (about 230 km to Padum, 8 to 10 hours) over Pensi La at about 4,400 m, usually open from June to October. Plan at least 4 to 5 days from Kargil. Highlights: Rangdum, Pensi La, Drang-Drung glacier, Karsha and the cliff monastery of Phugtal.

What to see

  • Suru valley and Nun-Kun views on the way from Kargil.
  • Rangdum Monastery, on a hillock in a wide, empty valley.
  • Pensi La and the Drang-Drung glacier, one of the most striking glaciers visible from a road in Ladakh.
  • Karsha Monastery, the largest in Zanskar, above Padum.
  • Phugtal Monastery, built into a cliff cave, reached by a walk from the road head.
  • Zangla and Stongde, villages and monasteries around Padum.

Best time to visit

June to early October, when Pensi La is open. July and August are warmest. From November the road usually closes with snow, and Zanskar is reached only by the Chadar trek in mid-winter or by the Shinku La road when open.
