Sonamarg is where Kashmir stops being gentle and turns alpine. The drive from Srinagar follows the Sind river up through the villages of Kangan and Gagangir, and then the valley widens into high meadow with glaciers hanging off the peaks above. It feels closer to Ladakh than to Dal Lake, and in a sense it is: Sonamarg is the last major stop before the Zoji La pass and the road to Kargil and Leh.

Things to do in Sonamarg
- Thajiwas Glacier: The main draw, reached by a short pony ride or walk from the meadow. Snow lingers here through much of the year.
- Alpine meadows and the Sind river: Wide grazing meadows and fast, cold rivers ideal for photographs and a picnic.
- Rafting on the Sind: Seasonal white-water rafting on the river below the meadow.
- Gadsar and the alpine lakes: Sonamarg is a trailhead for the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, one of India's finest high-altitude treks.
- The Zoji La road: The dramatic pass beyond Sonamarg toward Kargil and Ladakh, open in the warmer months.
Best time to visit Sonamarg
Sonamarg is a warmer-months destination. The high meadows and the Thajiwas Glacier are best from late spring to autumn.

How to reach Sonamarg
Sonamarg is about 80 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Srinagar along NH 1 through the Sind Valley. Most visitors do it as a full-day trip, leaving early to make the most of the meadow and glacier. You can stay overnight in one of the valley's hotels or camps if you want an early start on a trek or the Zoji La drive.
Local pony and sledge rates
At the meadow, pony rides to the Thajiwas Glacier are arranged through a local union with set rates. Agree the point and price before you set off, and carry a warm layer even in summer.
