Quick Answer

Warwan is a high valley in the Marwah area of Kishtwar district, at about 2,134 m, along the Warwan river, the largest right-bank tributary of the Chenab. Visitors usually reach it from Kashmir: from Kokernag via Vailoo and over the Margan Top pass (well above 3,600 m) down to Inshan, about 150 km and 7 to 8 hours from Srinagar on a largely unpaved road. Snow cuts the valley off for six to seven months a year, so the window is about June to October. Facilities are very basic: limited electricity, weak or no mobile signal and only simple stays.

Warwan is a long valley of wooden villages, fields and high pastures, cut off from the rest of the world for much of the year. The Margan Top road is the lifeline from the Kashmir side; on the far side, the river runs south to join the Chenab near Kishtwar. Travellers come for the drive over the pass, the flower meadows of June and July, and trekking routes that lead on towards the high ranges.

Approximate. Large parts of the road are unpaved, and landslides can close it.

Use a high-clearance vehicle with a driver who has done the Margan road this season. Fill fuel and draw cash in Anantnag or Kokernag; fuel and ATMs are scarce or absent in the valley.

What to expect in Warwan

  • Villages: Inshan, Sukhnai, Margi, Busmina and Aftee along the valley floor.
  • Margan Top: a wide, high pass with snowfields well into summer and views across the Pir Panjal.
  • Meadows and treks: June and July bring the main flowering season; trekking routes lead deeper into the ranges with a local guide.
  • Facilities: simple homestays and government rest houses, limited electricity, patchy or no mobile signal. Bring a power bank, medicines and warm layers.

Best time to visit Warwan

  • June and July: flowers in the meadows; snow still on the pass.
  • August and September: the most reliable road conditions, apart from rain-related landslides.
  • October: possible until the first snow closes Margan Top.
  • November to May: the road is usually snowbound.
