Quick Answer

Kashmir in June is warm and dry in the valley - Srinagar runs 16 to 30°C - while Gulmarg (2,650m) stays noticeably cooler at 8 to 21°C, with patches of old snow still visible near the upper gondola station (Apharwat, phase 2) through early-to-mid June in most years. Sonamarg and Pahalgam sit in between, mild by day and cool at night. June is peak season - book hotels and the Gulmarg gondola at least 3-4 weeks ahead.

June is the single most-asked-about month for a Kashmir trip, and for good reason - it is warm and reliably dry in the valley, every road and valley is open, and there is still a realistic chance of standing in snow at altitude the same afternoon you were in a green meadow. It is also peak season, so hotels, houseboats, and the Gulmarg gondola fill up weeks in advance.

This page gives the exact temperature ranges by destination, whether the snow question is true, and how to plan a June trip around the crowds.

Kashmir temperature in June, by destination

Ranges are typical for early-to-mid June; the second half of the month runs slightly warmer.

Is there still snow in Gulmarg in June?

Sometimes, but only at altitude and only early in the month. By June the meadows and lower gondola station (Phase 1, Kongdoori) are fully green with no snow. At the upper station (Phase 2, Apharwat, around 3,980m), leftover patches from winter can linger into the first half of June in a heavy-snow year, though they are shrinking daily and not guaranteed. By late June, Apharwat is typically bare rock and scree.

Do not plan a June trip around guaranteed snow

If seeing real snow is the priority, December to February is the reliable window. June gives you a small chance of a snow patch at Apharwat plus the far better odds of warm, clear, green-valley weather everywhere else - which is what most June travellers actually want.

Best places to visit in Kashmir in June

  • Gulmarg: The gondola to Apharwat for mountain views (and a last chance at snow), plus green meadows and golf below.
  • Pahalgam: Betaab Valley, Aru, and Chandanwari at their most lush, with the Lidder running full.
  • Sonamarg: Thajiwas Glacier trek and alpine meadows, fully accessible by June.
  • Srinagar: Dal Lake shikara rides and the Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar) in full bloom.

Planning around June crowds

  • June is the single busiest month of the year for Kashmir - book hotels and houseboats 4-6 weeks ahead.
  • Book the Gulmarg gondola ticket the same day you arrive, or through your operator in advance, to avoid the ticket-counter queue.
  • Start sightseeing early morning; Dal Lake and Mughal gardens get busy by mid-morning in June.
  • If your dates are flexible, the first week of June is slightly less crowded than the second half.

What to pack for Kashmir in June

  • Light cottons for Srinagar's warm days, plus one light jacket or fleece for Gulmarg and Sonamarg evenings.
  • Comfortable walking shoes; sturdier shoes if visiting Apharwat where old snow may remain.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses - UV is strong at altitude even on a mild day.
  • A light raincoat for the last week of June, when early monsoon-fringe showers can start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the temperature in Gulmarg in June?

Gulmarg in June typically sees daytime highs of 18-21°C and nights of 8-11°C. It is noticeably cooler than Srinagar, which runs 25-30°C by day, so carry a light jacket for Gulmarg even in peak summer.

Is there snow in Kashmir in June?

Snow in the main valley and at Gulmarg's lower gondola station is gone by June. Small leftover patches can remain at the upper Apharwat station (around 3,980m) into early-to-mid June in a heavy-snow year, but this is not guaranteed and shrinks through the month.

Is June a good month to visit Kashmir?

Yes - June is one of the two or three best months to visit Kashmir, with warm, dry, reliable weather and every destination fully open. It is also the busiest month, so book hotels and the Gulmarg gondola well ahead.

Does it rain in Kashmir in June?

Early and mid-June are generally dry. Light monsoon-fringe showers can begin in the last week of June in some years, more so than in May but far less than July and August.

What should I pack for Kashmir in June?

Light clothing for warm valley days, a light jacket or fleece for Gulmarg and Sonamarg evenings, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and sturdier shoes if visiting Apharwat for a chance at leftover snow.
