Summer is the Kashmir most people come for. The meadows are green, the rivers run full and cold with snowmelt, and there is still snow on the peaks above Gulmarg and Sonamarg while you stand in a wildflower meadow below. Days are warm but rarely hot, evenings turn cool, and every road and valley is open. It is the easiest season to travel, which is exactly why it is also the busiest.
This guide covers what summer weather is really like, where to go, the best summer experiences, and how to plan around the crowds and prices.
Kashmir summer weather, month by month
| Month | Weather | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| May | Warm days, cool nights, fresh green | Peak season begins, meadows greening, snow lingering high |
| June | Warmest and driest, lush | Peak of peak season, book well ahead, everything open |
| July | Warm with occasional rain | Monsoon fringe brushes the region; good value, green valleys |
| August | Warm, some rain, very green | Quieter than June, good for higher valleys and treks |
Best places to visit in Kashmir in summer
- Gulmarg: Green meadows and the gondola to Apharwat, with snow still up high. Golf and gentle walks.
- Pahalgam: The Lidder at full flow, and the valleys of Betaab, Aru, and Chandanwari at their greenest.
- Sonamarg: Fully open in summer, with the Thajiwas Glacier and alpine meadows at their best.
- Srinagar: Dal Lake, shikaras, and the Mughal gardens in full bloom.
- Offbeat meadows: Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, and the Great Lakes trek out of Sonamarg for those wanting to escape the crowds.
Best summer experiences
- Trekking: Summer is trek season. The Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar-Marsar are at their finest from July to early September.
- Rafting: The Lidder (Pahalgam) and Sind (Sonamarg) rivers run full for grade II-III rafting.
- Shikara and houseboat: Warm evenings make Dal Lake at sunset especially good.
- Gondola and meadows: Ride to the snowline in the morning, picnic in a green meadow by afternoon.
Beat the summer crowds
Travel in the second half of May, or in late August, for near-peak weather with lighter crowds and better rates. Start sightseeing early, and book the gondola and hotels well in advance for June.
What to pack for a Kashmir summer trip
- Light cottons for warm days, plus a light jacket or fleece for cool evenings and the high meadows.
- Comfortable walking shoes, and sturdier footwear if you plan to trek.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat; the mountain sun is strong.
- A light raincoat or umbrella for July and August showers.
