Leh local sightseeing (no permit needed)

Nubra Valley over Khardung La
Nubra Valley is reached by crossing Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world, before descending into a valley of sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels at Hunder - a landscape that looks nothing like the rest of the Himalaya. Diskit Monastery, with its large Buddha statue overlooking the valley, is the other major stop. Nubra is usually done as an overnight trip from Leh, not a same-day round trip.
Pangong Tso
Pangong Tso is a vast high-altitude lake that runs from Ladakh into Chinese-controlled territory, reached over the Chang La pass. The lake is known for shifting through shades of blue depending on the light and time of day. Most itineraries spend a night by the lake to catch both sunset and sunrise, then return to Leh - either back over Chang La or via Nubra on a longer loop, depending on your route and the season.
Permits and how sightseeing is arranged
Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso both require an Inner Line Permit (Indian citizens) or Protected Area Permit (foreign nationals), arranged through a registered local agent with nominal fees set by the local administration. How long do you need
A reasonable minimum for Leh local sights, Nubra and Pangong is about five to six days including an acclimatisation day in Leh before any high pass. Adding Tso Moriri or a longer Kashmir-Ladakh road trip extends this to eight or nine days. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for Leh local sightseeing?
No. Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Magnetic Hill and the local monasteries do not require a permit. Only Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri require an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange as part of your itinerary.
Can Nubra and Pangong be visited in one day from Leh?
Not comfortably. Nubra (over Khardung La) and Pangong (over Chang La) are usually visited as separate overnight trips, or combined into a longer loop over several days, rather than rushed into a single day from Leh.
What is the best time for Leh Ladakh sightseeing?
Roughly May to September, when Khardung La and Chang La are open and the roads to Nubra and Pangong are accessible. Outside this window, most of the sightseeing circuit beyond Leh town is closed by snow.
