Quick Answer
Offbeat Kashmir means the valleys beyond Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam: Gurez and Tulail in the north, Bangus and Lolab in Kupwara, Daksum, Aharbal, Kokernag and Verinag in the south, and Doodhpathri and Yusmarg as easy day trips. Via Kashmir runs these as private trips on request: your own cab and driver, stays booked for you, and an itinerary planned to your dates. A Srinagar to Gurez cab starts at ₹6,500, and a Doodhpathri day trip at ₹2,400 by sedan. Most roads to the remote valleys open from about May to October.
Most Kashmir trips follow the same circuit. The valleys below are where the crowds thin out: wooden villages on the Kishanganga, high meadows near the border, orchards, forest streams and Mughal springs. They need more planning than Gulmarg, which is why we run them as private trips with drivers who know these roads.
How our offbeat Kashmir tours work
- 1Tell us the valleys and your dates. We check the current road status (Razdan Pass for Gurez, the Bangus and Lolab roads) before quoting.
- 2Private cab and driver for the whole trip. An SUV is recommended for the Razdan Pass and the Bangus road.
- 3Stays booked for you. In the remote valleys this usually means guesthouses and homestays.
- 4One itemised quote for the cab, stays and meals, with Srinagar, Gulmarg or Pahalgam added if you want a mix of classic and offbeat.

The offbeat valleys, one by one
Gurez Valley
A remote valley on the Kishanganga river near the Line of Control, reached from Bandipora over the Razdan Pass (about 3,300 m). Dawar is the main village; the pyramid-shaped Habba Khatoon peak watches over it. The road is open in the warmer months and closes in winter. Indian visitors need no advance permit as of 2026. More on Gurez Valley.
Tulail Valley
The sub-valley east of Dawar, with wooden villages and very few visitors. The road is slow, so plan Tulail as a full day from a Gurez base. More on Tulail Valley.
Bangus Valley
A broad high-altitude meadow system, about 3,000 m, near Handwara and Kupwara. Road access has been improving but conditions change, so we confirm the route before every trip. Best as a long day or with a night nearby.
Lolab Valley
An oval valley of orchards and villages north of Kupwara town, with the Kalaroos caves nearby. Quiet, green and rarely busy; a good 2-day add-on to Srinagar.
Daksum
A thickly forested valley at about 2,438 m, 28 km above Kokernag along the Breng river. Trout fishing needs a J&K Fisheries Department permit, obtained in Anantnag before the trip. More on Daksum.
Aharbal Waterfall
The Vishav river drops about 25 m over a rock ledge into a wide pool, in pine and fir forest. The last stretch of road climbs steeply. An easy day trip.
Kokernag
A garden of freshwater springs, the gateway to Daksum. Combine it with Achabal and Verinag on a South Kashmir day. More on Kokernag.
Verinag
The source of the Jhelum: a deep octagonal spring inside a stone arcade built by Emperor Jahangir in 1620. More on Verinag.
Achabal
A Mughal garden of cascading spring water, often the first stop on a South Kashmir circuit. More on Achabal.
Doodhpathri
The "valley of milk": rolling meadows cut by cold streams, a quieter alternative to Gulmarg as a day trip. It gets day traffic on summer weekends, so go on a weekday. More on Doodhpathri.
Yusmarg
Pine-ringed meadows on the Doodh Ganga stream, with Nilnag lake a short trek away. A relaxed day trip from Srinagar. More on Yusmarg.
