Quick Answer

Aharbal is a waterfall on the Veshaw river in the Noorabad area of Kulgam district, south Kashmir, at about 2,266 m. The river drops about 25 m and then another 7 m through a narrow granite gorge, which is why it is sometimes called the "Niagara of Kashmir". It is about 75 km from Srinagar, under 3 hours by road via Pulwama and Shopian, and 22 km from Kulgam. No permit or ticket is needed. May to October is the best time; the area gets heavy snow in winter.

The Veshaw comes down from Kousarnag lake in the Pir Panjal and squeezes through a rock channel at Aharbal before spreading out into the valley. The roar, the spray and the pine forest around it make it one of the most striking sights in south Kashmir, yet it sees far fewer visitors than Pahalgam or Gulmarg. Short walks lead to viewpoints above and beside the falls.

Approximate.

There is no direct bus for visitors; a private cab is the practical option and lets you combine Aharbal with Shopian's apple orchards in autumn. From the parking area it is a short walk on forest paths to the falls.

Safety at the falls

Stay behind the railings

The rocks around the gorge are wet and polished, and the current is fast and very cold. Do not climb down to the water, do not cross the barriers for photos, and keep children close.

Things to do around Aharbal

  • The falls viewpoints: paths above and beside the gorge give the best views of both drops.
  • Kousarnag trek: the high lake that feeds the Veshaw can be trekked from the Aharbal side. See the Kousarnag trek guide.
  • Forest walks and picnics: meadows and pine forest along the river.
  • Shopian orchards: on the way, best in September and October at apple harvest.

Best time to visit Aharbal

  • May and June: snowmelt makes the falls at their most powerful.
  • July to September: green forest, comfortable days; rain can make paths slippery.
  • October: autumn colour and clear skies.
  • November to March: heavy snow; check the road before going.
