Quick Answer: With young children, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are the easiest day trips from Srinagar: about 1.5 hours each way, open meadows and streams, and few crowds. Gulmarg (1.5 hours) adds the gondola and, in winter, snow. Sonamarg (2.5 hours) is better for older children. Pahalgam is too far for a day trip with small children; give it two nights.
Children judge a day trip by three things: how long they sit in the car, what they can do when they get out, and whether there is a toilet and something to eat when they need it. Kashmir's meadows are made for children, but they differ a lot on those three points. Here is how the main day trips from Srinagar compare.
Day trips from Srinagar compared
| Day trip | Drive each way | Altitude | What kids enjoy | Facilities | Best ages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doodhpathri | About 42 km, 1.5 hr | About 2,730 m | Streams to paddle in, open meadow, ponies | Basic stalls and toilets | All ages |
| Yusmarg | About 47 km, 1.5 hr | About 2,400 m | Pine forest edges, meadow, short pony ride | Basic; a few eateries | All ages |
| Gulmarg | About 50 km, 1.5 hr | About 2,650 m | Gondola, snow in winter, meadow | Best of the meadows: restaurants and hotels | All ages; gondola Phase 1 for small kids |
| Sonamarg | About 80 km, 2.5 hr | About 2,800 m | Glacier views, river, ponies to Thajiwas | Restaurants in the market | 6 and older |
| Pahalgam | About 90 km, 2.5 to 3 hr | About 2,130 m | River, Betaab Valley park, ponies | Good in town | Better as 2 nights |
Distances are the road distances our drivers use for cab fares; drive times are for normal traffic and good weather.
Doodhpathri with kids
Doodhpathri, in Budgam district, is a wide meadow with a cold, shallow stream running through it, and children love the water. It is quieter than Gulmarg, the drive is short, and there is plenty of space to run. Facilities are basic, so carry snacks, water and wet wipes. The road is usually open from around April to November; in winter, access depends on snow.
Yusmarg with kids
Yusmarg is a gentle meadow ringed by pine forest, a little lower and greener than Doodhpathri. Pony rides go to Nilnag lake, which is a longer outing better suited to older children. With toddlers, stay on the meadow, have a picnic and head back early.
Gulmarg with kids
Gulmarg is the most organised of the meadows, with restaurants, hotels and the gondola. Phase 1 to Kongdori is a short ride most children enjoy; Phase 2 is very high and cold and is best skipped with small children. In winter, Gulmarg is the main place for snow play and sledges. Book gondola tickets in advance; see our gondola guide.

Sonamarg with kids
Sonamarg is the longest of the day trips and the highest. The meadow and river are lovely, and ponies go to the Thajiwas glacier, though the ride is long and bumpy for little ones. It suits children of six and older who manage a 2.5 hour drive each way. Read our Sonamarg day trip guide for timings.
Pahalgam with kids, if you stay
Pahalgam is the best base in the valley for families who want two quieter days. Betaab Valley has a level park with paths, a stream and space to run; Aru is a gentle open valley; Chandanwari usually has snow well into summer. All three are reached by the Pahalgam union taxi, a fixed local fare paid to the operator. See our Betaab Valley guide.

Stops on the way that work for children
- ✓Pampore, on the Pahalgam road: saffron fields flower in late October and early November; at other times, roadside shops sell saffron and dry fruit.
- ✓Awantipora ruins, also on the Pahalgam road: a short walk among 9th-century temple stones.
- ✓Tangmarg, on the Gulmarg road: tea, toilets, and in winter the place to hire snow boots and coats.
- ✓Kangan and Gund, on the Sonamarg road: riverside dhabas for a break.
Car seats and the drive
Indian taxis rarely carry child seats, so bring your own if your child uses one. Ask for an Innova or Crysta for more room, plan a break every hour, and keep snacks and a bag within reach. Most of these roads are paved but winding in the last stretch.

Pony rides: what parents should know
- ✓Ponies are available at every meadow. Rates are fixed locally and paid directly to the operator; agree the route and price before you set off.
- ✓Ask the pony handler to walk beside small children. Children under five are usually safest riding with a parent or not at all.
- ✓Helmets are rarely available. Keep rides short and on gentle ground.
A day plan that keeps children happy
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 8 am | Leave Srinagar after breakfast |
| 9.30 am | Arrive while it is quiet; toilet stop first |
| 10 am to 12.30 pm | Meadow, stream, a short pony ride |
| 12.30 pm | Lunch, or a picnic you brought |
| 1.30 pm | Start back; children nap in the car |
| 3.30 pm | Back in Srinagar for a rest, or a shikara at 5 pm |
What to pack for a meadow day
- ✓A warm layer for each child, even in summer: the meadows are 6 to 8 degrees colder than Srinagar
- ✓A spare set of clothes and socks (streams and snow)
- ✓Snacks, water, wet wipes and tissues
- ✓Sunscreen, caps and sunglasses
- ✓Car-sickness medicine if your child needs it; the Doodhpathri and Sonamarg roads have curves

Is Doodhpathri good for kids?
Yes. It is about 42 km from Srinagar, with a wide meadow and shallow streams children love. Facilities are basic, so carry snacks and water.
Is Gulmarg or Doodhpathri better with a toddler?
Doodhpathri is quieter and less crowded; Gulmarg has more restaurants and toilets. With a toddler, many families prefer Gulmarg in winter for the facilities and Doodhpathri in summer for the calm.
Can we do Pahalgam as a day trip with kids?
It is possible but long: 2.5 to 3 hours each way, plus the union taxi to Betaab or Aru. With small children, two nights in Pahalgam is much better.
Are pony rides safe for children in Kashmir?
Short rides on gentle ground are fine for most children over five, with the handler walking alongside. Agree the route and price first.

A shikara ride on Dal Lake, the floating market at dawn in summer, the fountains at Nishat Bagh, the Tulip Garden in spring and the Botanical Garden lawns.
Do Kashmir taxis have child car seats?
Rarely. Bring your own if your child needs one; an Innova or Crysta has room to fit it.
Do kids get altitude sickness on these day trips?
It is uncommon at the meadows, which are between about 2,130 m and 2,800 m, especially as you return to Srinagar the same day. Keep them warm and drinking water.
