Overview
Awantipora, in Pulwama district on NH 44, was founded in the 9th century by King Avantivarman, who ruled Kashmir from 855 to 883 AD as the first king of the Utpala dynasty and gave the town its name. It is best known for the ruins of two temples he built: Avantiswami (dedicated to Vishnu) and Avantishwar (to Shiva), a kilometre apart. Their carved stone plinths and colonnades are among the most important archaeological sites in Kashmir. Awantipora is an easy stop on the drive between Srinagar and Pahalgam.
