Quick Answer: For Kashmir in winter with kids, pack thermal inner layers, a fleece, a waterproof jacket and trousers, waterproof gloves, a woollen cap and two pairs of thick socks per day. Hire snow boots and long coats at Tangmarg instead of buying them. Confirm how the hotel room is heated before you pay, and plan one outdoor outing a day.
Children love Kashmir in snow. They also get cold faster than adults, tire sooner at altitude, and go from happy to miserable the moment a glove gets wet. Most winter trips that go wrong do so because of clothing and heating, not because of the snow itself. This is the list we give families before a December to February trip, and the plan we follow on the ground.
How cold is Kashmir in winter?
In Srinagar, December to February nights usually drop below freezing and days stay in single digits. Gulmarg, about 1,000 m higher, is colder still and is under snow for most of the season. The coldest 40 days, known locally as Chillai Kalan, run from about 21 December to the end of January. Daylight is short: the sun sets around 5.15 pm in December, and the meadows lose their warmth well before that.
Packing list for children, layer by layer
| Layer | What to pack | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Thermal top and bottom (wool or synthetic, not cotton) | 2 to 3 sets |
| Middle | Fleece or woollen sweater | 2 |
| Outer | Waterproof, padded jacket and waterproof trousers | 1 each |
| Hands | Waterproof ski-style gloves, plus a spare pair | 2 pairs |
| Head and neck | Woollen cap covering the ears, neck warmer or scarf | 1 to 2 |
| Feet | Thick woollen socks; warm shoes for the car and hotel | 2 pairs a day |
| Face and skin | Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, moisturiser | 1 each |
| Day bag | Spare socks and gloves, wet wipes, snacks, a flask, a small towel | Every outing |
Wet gloves end snow days. Pack two waterproof pairs per child and keep the spare pair dry in a zip bag.

What can we hire at Tangmarg instead of buying?
On the way up to Gulmarg, shops at Tangmarg hire out long padded coats and gumboots (rubber snow boots) for the day, in children's sizes. They are worn over your own clothes and returned on the way down. It saves carrying bulky gear on a flight. Check the fit and that the boots are dry inside before you pay, agree the price before you take them, and keep your own warm layers underneath. Sledges and ski lessons are booked at the meadow.
How do I check the hotel room heating?
- ✓Ask what heats the room: central heating, an oil-filled radiator, an electric heater, or a bukhari (wood or gas stove). Central heating is best for small children.
- ✓Ask whether heating is included in the room price or charged per night; some hotels charge extra.
- ✓Ask about hot water hours. Some smaller properties run geysers only in the morning and evening.
- ✓Ask whether the hotel has power backup. Snow can cause outages, especially in Gulmarg.
We check all four for every winter booking. Start with Srinagar hotels with room heating and Gulmarg hotels.

A winter day that works with children
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 8.30 am | Breakfast, layers on, leave by 9 am |
| 10 am | Arrive at the snow (Gulmarg meadow or Gondola Phase 1) |
| 10 am to 12.30 pm | Snow play, a sledge ride, a short gondola trip |
| 12.30 to 1.30 pm | Hot lunch indoors; change gloves and socks |
| 2 pm | Start back down while the road is still in sunlight |
| 4 pm | Rest at the hotel; hot drinks, dry clothes |
One snow outing a day is plenty for children under ten. Trying to fit Gulmarg, a shikara ride and a market in one winter day leaves everyone cold and tired.
Snow activities by age

|---|---|---|---|
| Snow play and snowmen | Gulmarg meadow, Sonamarg, Pahalgam | Any age | Keep toddlers in waterproof all-in-ones |

Babies and toddlers in a Kashmir winter
- ✓Plan most of the trip in Srinagar, with one or two snow day trips rather than nights in Gulmarg.
- ✓A baby carrier is more useful than a pram on snow and at the meadows.
- ✓Pack formula, baby food and nappies for the whole trip; supplies in Gulmarg and Sonamarg are limited.
- ✓Indian taxis rarely have child seats. Bring your own if your child uses one.
- ✓Ask the hotel for an extra heater or a room near the heating unit.
Health in the cold
- ✓Indoor heating dries the air. Saline nose drops and moisturiser help with dry noses and lips.
- ✓Mountain roads cause car sickness. Give medicine before the drive, not during it, and keep a window open a crack.
- ✓Children lose heat through the head and hands first. Cap and gloves on, every time they go out.
- ✓Never leave a child near a kangri, the traditional fire pot many Kashmiris carry under the pheran. It holds live embers and causes burns.
Indoor and city options for cold days
When it is too cold or snowing hard, Srinagar has easy indoor options: a heated houseboat with a view of the lake, a bakery breakfast in the old city, the Sri Pratap Singh Museum, and the craft shops along the Boulevard. A short shikara ride on a sunny afternoon is still the highlight for most children.
Book for this trip
Which places are open in winter?
- ✓Gulmarg: the main snow destination. The gondola runs in winter, weather permitting. In heavy snow the road from Tangmarg may be limited to 4x4 vehicles with chains.
- ✓Sonamarg: reachable all winter since the Z-Morh tunnel opened, subject to weather and road advisories. Snow play near the meadow.
- ✓Pahalgam: open, with snow in town for much of the season. Aru and Betaab are beautiful under snow; access depends on the road.
- ✓Srinagar: Dal Lake shikara rides continue on sunny days. In very cold spells the edges of the lake can freeze.
- ✓Closed for the season: Gurez, Sinthan Top and the Mughal Road usually close from around December.
Flights and a spare day
Winter fog and snow sometimes delay or cancel flights at Srinagar. Keep one spare day at the end of the trip, and avoid booking an onward connection on the same day as your Srinagar flight. If the Jammu to Srinagar road is part of your plan, check the highway status the day before.
Packages built for families in winter
Our Kashmir Family Vacation, Kids Special (from ₹13,199 per person) keeps days short with a snow day in Gulmarg and pony rides in Pahalgam. For a Gulmarg night in the snow, the Winter Special Kashmir Package 4N5D (from ₹17,399) adds an overnight there and a houseboat night in Srinagar.
We plan winter trips for families every week: heated rooms checked, one snow outing a day, and drivers with chains and winter tyres.
