Quick Answer: For New Year in Kashmir, most travellers spend 31 December in Gulmarg for the snow, with Srinagar before and after. Book Gulmarg hotels and flights by October or early November, because the last week of December sells out. Ask each hotel about a compulsory New Year's Eve dinner charge, and keep a spare day for snow or flight delays.
The week between Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest of the year in Kashmir. Gulmarg is usually under snow, Srinagar is cold and bright, and hotels fill with families and groups who want a white New Year. It is a wonderful time to come, as long as you book early and plan for winter conditions.
What is Kashmir like at New Year?
- ✓Gulmarg: normally under snow by late December, with the gondola running in good weather. It is the busiest place in the valley on 31 December. Hotels hold their own celebrations; there is no single public event.
- ✓Pahalgam: quieter than Gulmarg, often with snow in town and along the Lidder. A good choice if you want snow without the crowds.
- ✓Sonamarg: reachable in winter through the Z-Morh tunnel, subject to weather. Usually visited as a day trip from Srinagar.
- ✓Srinagar: cold, sometimes foggy in the morning, with clear afternoons. A shikara ride on a sunny day is still lovely; some houseboats are heated.
This is the start of Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 days of the Kashmiri winter, which run from about 21 December. Nights drop below freezing in Srinagar and well below in Gulmarg. Read our Kashmir in December guide and the live Gulmarg snowfall page before you travel.
When should I book a New Year trip to Kashmir?
| What | Book by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg hotel for 30 to 31 December | October to early November | Limited rooms, and the best ones go first |
| Flights to Srinagar | As early as possible | Fares rise sharply in the last two weeks of December |
| Gondola tickets | Once dates are fixed | Queues are long in the New Year week |
| Ski lessons | A few weeks before | Instructors are busy over the holidays |

The New Year's Eve dinner charge
Many hotels in Gulmarg and Pahalgam add a compulsory gala dinner on 31 December, charged per person on top of the room. It may include a bonfire, music and a buffet. It is not always shown when you book online. Ask every hotel whether there is a 31 December charge, what it includes, and whether children pay. We list it as a separate line on our quotes so there are no surprises at check-in.
Snow, roads and flights: what can go wrong
- ✓Heavy snow: the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road may be limited to 4x4 vehicles with chains for a day or two. Our drivers carry chains; local 4x4s run from Tangmarg when needed.
- ✓Flights: fog and snow sometimes delay or cancel flights at Srinagar. Do not book an onward connection on the same day as your Srinagar flight.
- ✓Highway: if you come by road from Jammu, check the highway status the day before.
- ✓Power and heating: snow can cause outages in Gulmarg. Choose hotels with power backup; we check it for every winter booking.

Christmas in Kashmir
Srinagar has a small Christian community and old churches, including Holy Family Catholic Church on Maulana Azad Road and St Luke's Church near the Boulevard. Christmas services are held there. Most hotels mark Christmas with a special dinner, and the week is a good time to arrive before the New Year rush.
Skiing over New Year
The New Year week is early in Gulmarg's ski season. Beginners can take lessons on the nursery slopes near the gondola base; experienced skiers use Gondola Phase 2 when snow cover and weather allow. Book instructors in advance for the holiday week. See skiing courses in Gulmarg and Gulmarg skiing packages.

New Year with children
Children love the snow, but the late-night celebration and the cold can be a lot. Choose a hotel where the 31 December dinner is indoors and early enough for the children, and plan a slow morning on 1 January. Our winter packing list for kids covers clothing.
What to pack
Thermal layers, a waterproof padded jacket, waterproof gloves, a woollen cap, thick socks and warm shoes. Snow boots and long coats can be hired at Tangmarg on the way up. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen: snow glare is strong. Travelling with children? See our Kashmir winter packing list for kids.
New Year week sells out first. Send your dates and group size and we will hold Gulmarg rooms and plan the rest around the weather.
