Does Your SIM Work in Kashmir? Prepaid, Postpaid and Internet

The one thing most first-time visitors find out at Srinagar airport: a prepaid number from another state goes silent the moment you land. Here is how to arrive connected.

Quick Answer

Prepaid mobile connections issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in Kashmir, a long-standing security rule that still applies. Postpaid connections from any Indian operator (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) work on roaming. Before you travel, either switch your number to postpaid (Jio and Airtel do it online or at a store, usually within a day) or make sure one person in your group has a postpaid phone to share a hotspot. Hotels and houseboats in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam have Wi-Fi, and your Via Kashmir driver carries a working local phone throughout the trip.

Our team in Srinagar takes this call almost every day in season: a family has landed, the cab is waiting outside, and nobody can phone the driver because every phone in the group is prepaid. It is the most common avoidable problem on a Kashmir trip, and it takes ten minutes to fix before you leave home.

This guide covers what works, what does not, how to fix it before you fly, and what coverage to expect in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

What works and what does not

ConnectionWorks in Kashmir?Notes
Postpaid from any state (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL)YesWorks on normal domestic roaming, calls and data.
Prepaid from outside Jammu and KashmirNoNo calls, SMS or data from the moment you arrive. Incoming OTPs do not arrive either.

The OTP problem

Because a prepaid number stops receiving SMS in Kashmir, bank OTPs for card payments and UPI set-up will not arrive. If you plan to pay for anything by card during the trip, the phone that receives your bank OTP must be postpaid or on Wi-Fi calling.

Fix it before you fly: three options

  1. 1Convert your number to postpaid. Jio and Airtel both let you move an existing prepaid number to postpaid in their app or at a store; it usually completes within a day. You keep the same number and can move back after the trip.
  2. 2Carry one postpaid phone per group. If one person has postpaid, they can run a hotspot for the rest. Give that number to us as the trip contact.
  3. 3Buy a local prepaid SIM. Possible in Srinagar with an ID and address proof, but it needs local verification and can take hours to activate. It is the slowest option and not worth it for a short trip.

Do this before the day you fly, not at the airport. Once you are in Kashmir on a prepaid number, you cannot receive the confirmation SMS that a conversion needs.

Coverage by destination

PlaceMobile coverageWhat to expect
Srinagar and Dal LakeGoodAll major operators work across the city and on houseboats.
GulmargFairWorks in the town and at the Gondola base; weaker higher up and in heavy snow.
PahalgamFairWorks in town; drops on the way to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari.
SonamargPatchyWeak signal; expect to be offline for parts of the day, especially towards Thajiwas.
Doodhpathri and YusmargWeakTreat these as offline day trips.

Typical coverage on a postpaid connection; it varies by operator and weather

Download offline maps of the Kashmir Valley before you leave Srinagar, and save your hotel and driver numbers in your phone, not only in a chat app.

How we handle this on a Via Kashmir trip

  • We ask for a postpaid contact number when you book, and remind you about the prepaid rule in your trip confirmation.
  • Your driver carries a working local phone for the whole trip, so you can always reach him and us through him.
  • Our team answers on WhatsApp every day from 9am to 9pm, and on-trip support runs round the clock; WhatsApp works on any hotel or houseboat Wi-Fi even if your SIM does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a prepaid SIM work in Kashmir?

No. Prepaid connections issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in Kashmir: no calls, SMS or data. Only postpaid connections from other states work. Prepaid SIMs issued within Jammu and Kashmir do work.

Does Jio or Airtel prepaid work in Kashmir?

Not if the connection was issued outside Jammu and Kashmir. Jio and Airtel postpaid work normally. You can convert a Jio or Airtel prepaid number to postpaid before you travel, usually within a day, and keep the same number.

Can tourists buy a SIM card in Srinagar?

Yes, with an original ID and address proof, but it needs local verification and can take several hours to activate. For a short trip it is easier to convert your own number to postpaid before you fly.

Will I get bank OTPs on a prepaid number in Kashmir?

No. SMS stops on an outside prepaid number, so card and UPI OTPs will not arrive. Use a postpaid number or Wi-Fi for anything that needs an OTP.

Is there mobile network in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg?

On postpaid, Gulmarg and Pahalgam towns have fair coverage, weaker on the roads to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari and higher on Apharwat. Sonamarg is patchy. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are best treated as offline.

Does Wi-Fi work in Kashmir hotels and houseboats?

Most hotels and houseboats have Wi-Fi. It is good in Srinagar and slower in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, especially in bad weather. WhatsApp calls over Wi-Fi are the easiest way to stay in touch.
