Quick Answer
In Pahalgam, outside vehicles, including your hired or package cab, cannot drive to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. Those trips run only in vehicles of the Pahalgam taxi union, hired at the official stand in town at rates the union sets. In Sonamarg, the drive towards Zero Point is also by local union taxi, and Thajiwas Glacier is reached on foot or by pony. In Gulmarg your own car can reach the town and the Gondola base. Union taxis and ponies are paid on the spot and are not part of any package, so budget for them separately.
Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg packages
The local taxi unions in Kashmir's hill resorts exist to keep sightseeing income with the families who live there. For visitors that means one rule: inside the resort, you switch to a local vehicle. It is a fixed system, not a scam, as long as you hire from the official stand.

How to hire a union taxi without hassle
- 1Go to the official taxi stand in Pahalgam or Sonamarg, not a person who approaches you on the road or at your hotel gate.
- 2Ask for the rate card. Rates are fixed per route and vehicle type by the union.
- 3Agree the route, the stops and the waiting time before you get in. Point-to-point and round-trip fares differ.
- 4Pay in cash at the end; UPI may not work in the valleys. See cash and UPI in Kashmir.
- 5Start early. Queues at the stand build by mid-morning in season.
Families and seniors
Union vehicles are typically SUVs or small cars. Ask for a vehicle with enough room, and tell the driver if anyone needs short walks only; Betaab Valley and Aru both have viewpoints close to where the taxi stops.
Why packages do not include union taxis
Union taxis and pony rides are run by local associations that set and collect their own rates, so tour operators cannot buy them in advance. Every honest Kashmir package lists them as an on-the-spot extra. Ours do too, and your itinerary shows exactly which days you will need them.
On a Pahalgam tour package your private cab brings you to Pahalgam and waits; the union taxi covers the valleys that day. On a Sonamarg tour package plan the Thajiwas walk or pony ride for the morning, when the weather is steadiest.

Can my cab go to Sonamarg and Zero Point?
Your cab can reach Sonamarg, which is reachable all year since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in 2025. The drive on towards Zero Point is by local union taxi when the road is open; it closes in winter. Thajiwas Glacier is on foot or by pony.
