Quick Answer: A Kashmir-based travel company plans and runs your trip directly, so the people who quote you are the people who handle the snow, the road closure or the hotel problem on the day. Many agencies outside Kashmir sell a Kashmir package and then pass the ground work to a local operator, which adds a link to the chain and often a margin. An outside agency can still be a good choice if you know and trust them. Either way, ask who will run the trip in Kashmir, what exactly is included, and which company you are paying.
Every season we meet travellers in Srinagar who booked through an agency in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru and are trying to work out who to call: the agent at home, or the driver who has never heard of their itinerary. This post explains how Kashmir trips are usually delivered, what changes when you book with a team in Kashmir, and how to judge any operator, including us.
We are Via Kashmir, a Srinagar-based travel company, so read this with that in mind. We have kept to points you can check, and we say where an outside agency is the better fit.
How an outside agency usually delivers a Kashmir trip
Most travel agencies outside Kashmir do not have their own staff, cabs or hotel contracts in the valley. A common model is:
- You book a package with an agency in your city.
- The agency buys the ground arrangements (hotels, cab, sightseeing) from a Kashmir operator, often called a DMC (destination management company).
- The Kashmir operator assigns the hotels and a driver and runs the trip.
- When something changes, the message passes from you to your agent, to the local operator, to the driver or hotel, and back.
This is a normal, legal model, and many trips go perfectly. We work this way ourselves for agencies outside Kashmir, as their Kashmir DMC. But it explains the two most common complaints: you pay for an extra layer, and decisions on the ground are slower because the person you booked with is not there.
What changes with a Kashmir-based team
1. One team from quote to drop-off
The people who plan your itinerary also assign your hotels and driver. When you message about a change, you reach the team that can make it.
2. Ground knowledge that changes your plan
Examples from 2026 alone: Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam stayed closed while nearby valleys reopened; Sonamarg became reachable in winter after the Z-Morh tunnel opened in 2025; Gulmarg's gondola Phase 2 closes on windy days. A Srinagar team plans around these every day.
3. Local rules built into the quote
In Pahalgam and Sonamarg, outside cabs drop you in town and local union taxis take you to Betaab, Aru, Chandanwari and Zero Point. Quotes from outside the valley sometimes leave this out, and travellers find the extra cost on the day. We itemise it.
4. Hotels we see every week
We book guests into the same properties week after week, so we hear quickly when a hotel changes, closes a wing for winter or has a heating problem.
5. One bill from a registered local company
You pay VIAKASHMIR OPC PRIVATE LIMITED, registered in Srinagar (CIN U79110JK2025OPC017979, GSTIN 01AALCV4421A1ZZ), and receive an itemised quote: hotels, cab and sightseeing priced line by line, with GST shown before you pay.
When an outside agency is the better choice
- ✓You have travelled with them before and trust them to handle problems.
- ✓Kashmir is one part of a longer India trip they are organising end to end.
- ✓Your company has a corporate travel contract that requires it.
- ✓You want to pay and deal with someone in your own city, in person.
If that is you, ask your agent the questions below. A good agency will answer them easily.

Ten questions to ask any Kashmir operator
- Who will run my trip in Kashmir: your own team, or a local operator? Can I have their name?
- Which hotels exactly, or which hotels "or similar", and what does similar mean?
- How are the rooms heated (for October to March travel)?
- Is the cab private for the whole trip, and which vehicle?
- Are union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg included, or extra?
- Are gondola tickets, shikara rides and entry fees included?
- Which meals are included each day?
- What happens if a road or site is closed on the day?
- What are the cancellation and refund rules, in writing?
- Which registered company am I paying, and will I get a GST invoice?
How to check any travel company in Kashmir
- ✓Look up its company registration (CIN) on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs website and its GSTIN on the GST portal.
- ✓Check that the business has a real presence in Kashmir and a working phone number during the hours it states.
- ✓Read recent reviews on independent platforms, not only testimonials on its own site.
- ✓Insist on an itemised quote rather than a single package number.
- ✓Pay a company account, never a personal account, and keep the invoice.

Compare my quote →Frequently asked questions
Is it better to book a Kashmir trip with a local agent?
Often, because the team that quotes you is the team that runs the trip and handles changes on the ground. An outside agency you already trust can also work well; ask who runs the trip in Kashmir.
Do agencies outside Kashmir use local operators?
Most do. They usually buy hotels, cabs and sightseeing from a Kashmir operator, known as a DMC, and resell them as a package.
Is booking directly with a Kashmir company cheaper?
It can be, because there is one less layer in the chain, but it depends on the hotels and dates. Compare itemised quotes, not package totals.
How do I know a Kashmir travel company is genuine?
Check its company registration and GSTIN on the government portals, confirm a real presence and phone number in Kashmir, read independent reviews, and pay only a company account.
What should a Kashmir tour quote include?
Named hotels or clear equivalents, meal plans, a private cab with the vehicle type, sightseeing, union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, entry fees and gondola tickets, taxes, and the cancellation terms.
Is Via Kashmir a travel agency or a booking site?
Both. We are a Srinagar-based travel company that lists hotels, houseboats, cabs and packages you can book online, and plans custom trips.
Does Via Kashmir work with travel agents?
Yes. Agencies outside Kashmir use us as their Kashmir DMC for hotels, transport and ground handling.
