Quick Answer: Beyond the Vaishno Devi darshan, the best things to do in Katra are the Bhairon Nath temple (a short ropeway ride above the Bhawan), the Ardhkuwari cave on the trek, Baba Dhansar's spring and waterfall about 15 km away, the Shiv Khori cave temple (a long day trip, about 70 to 90 km), Bhimgarh Fort in Reasi, a look at the Chenab rail bridge, and Patnitop for pine forests. In the evening, Katra's market is the place for dry fruits and prasad. One spare day covers the nearest sights.

Most people treat Katra as a base: arrive, climb to the Bhawan, come down, leave. If you have a spare half day or day, either before the yatra while you wait for your slot or after it while your legs recover, there is more to see than most pilgrims realise, from cave shrines to a Dogra fort and the world's highest railway arch bridge.

For registration, trek routes and the helicopter, see our Vaishno Devi yatra guide. If you are carrying on to Kashmir, see Kashmir tour packages from Katra.

On the yatra route

1. Vaishno Devi darshan

The reason you are here: a trek of about 12 to 13 km from Banganga to the Bhawan, or a helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat followed by a shorter walk. Register for your yatra card before you start. Our Vaishno Devi yatra guide explains each option.

2. Bhairon Nath temple

Tradition holds that the pilgrimage is complete only after visiting Bhairon Nath, about 2 km above the Bhawan. A ropeway from the Bhawan area takes a few minutes and saves a steep climb. Queues for the ropeway can be long in peak season.

3. Ardhkuwari

Roughly halfway up the trek, the Ardhkuwari cave (Garbh Joon) is a narrow cave where the goddess is said to have meditated. Entry is by token and the wait can be several hours, so many pilgrims visit on the way down.

4. Banganga and Charan Paduka

Near the start of the trek, Banganga is a stream where pilgrims traditionally bathe, and Charan Paduka a little higher up marks footprints on a rock. Both are easy to see on the walk.

Day trips from Katra

5. Baba Dhansar

About 15 km from Katra, Baba Dhansar is a shrine beside a spring and waterfall in a wooded gorge, popular for a quiet half day. Karua lake is close by.

6. Shiv Khori cave temple

A long, narrow cave with a natural Shiva lingam, in Reasi district, about 70 to 90 km from Katra depending on the route, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. From the road head it is a walk of about 3 km. It is a full day out; leave early and carry water.

7. Bhimgarh Fort, Reasi

A hilltop Dogra fort above Reasi town, about 25 km from Katra, with views over the Chenab valley. Combine it with Baba Dhansar or the Chenab Bridge.

8. See the Chenab rail bridge

The Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge at about 359 m above the river, lies in Reasi district. Viewpoints near the bridge have drawn visitors since it opened; road access and timings can change, so check locally before you go. Or simply ride over it on the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat.

9. Dera Baba Banda

A historic Sikh gurudwara on the banks of the Chenab, associated with Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, about 30 km from Katra.

10. Jhajjar Kotli

A riverside picnic spot on the Jammu road, with shallow water and shade. It is an easy stop on the way in from Jammu or on the way out.

11. Patnitop and Sanasar

Pine forests and meadows at about 2,000 m, a good half-day or full-day trip from Katra, with paragliding and a gondola in season. Since the Chenani-Nashri tunnel opened, the highway bypasses Patnitop, so you need to plan the detour. See our Patnitop prices guide.

12. The evening market

Katra's main market stays busy late. Pilgrims buy prasad, chunri, dry fruits (walnuts, almonds and dates), and woollens. Compare prices between shops and buy sealed packs from shops with printed rates.

13. Eat simply and well

Katra is a vegetarian town; meat and alcohol are not served in the yatra area. Rajma chawal, kadhi, chole bhature and fresh sweets are everywhere, and the food at the Shrine Board's bhojanalayas on the route is simple and clean.
