Quick Answer: Gulmarg to Sonamarg is about 120 km by road, a drive of 3 h 30 m to 4 h 30 m by private cab. The road goes down to Tangmarg and Magam, skirts the northern edge of Srinagar near Parimpora, then follows the Sindh river up through Kangan and Gund to Sonamarg. If you go through central Srinagar it is about 130 km. There is no direct bus, so a private cab is the practical way to do it in one go.

Gulmarg and Sonamarg are the two big mountain meadows of the Kashmir valley, and many travellers want to see both on one trip. They sit on opposite sides of Srinagar: Gulmarg to the west in Baramulla district, Sonamarg to the north-east on the road to Ladakh. You cannot drive straight across the mountains between them, so every route passes close to Srinagar. This guide explains the distance, the route, how long it really takes, and whether to drive between them directly or plan both as trips from Srinagar.

If you are still deciding which of the two to visit, read Gulmarg or Sonamarg: which is better first. For distances from Srinagar to every main spot, see our Kashmir distance guide.

How far is Gulmarg from Sonamarg?

Gulmarg is about 120 km from Sonamarg by road. That is the shortest drivable route, measured on OpenStreetMap, using the bypass at Parimpora on the northern edge of Srinagar. Many drivers go through the city instead, along the Srinagar - Gulmarg road (about 50 km) and then the Srinagar - Sonamarg road (about 80 km), which makes it about 130 km.

The straight-line distance is much shorter, but the Pir Panjal and Harmukh ranges sit in the way, so no road crosses directly. Every Gulmarg to Sonamarg drive comes down into the valley floor first.

The route, stretch by stretch

1. Gulmarg to Tangmarg (about 13 km)

A winding hill road down through pine forest. It is the slowest stretch per kilometre, especially in winter, when the traffic police can stop cars without snow chains or four-wheel drive after fresh snowfall. Allow 30 to 40 minutes.

2. Tangmarg to Parimpora via Magam (about 27 km)

Flat valley road through villages and paddy fields to the Srinagar - Baramulla highway (NH1) near Parimpora. This is where you choose: continue into Srinagar if you want lunch or a stop in the city, or take the bypass north towards Ganderbal to save time.

3. Parimpora to the Sindh valley (about 30 km)

The road runs north past the Ganderbal side of the valley and joins the Srinagar - Leh highway near Wayil, where the Sindh river comes out of the mountains.

4. Up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg (about 50 km)

The most scenic part of the drive: the road follows the Sindh river through Kangan and Gund, with forest, orchards and the river beside you most of the way. See our Kangan to Sonamarg drive guide for stops along this stretch.

How long does the drive take?

Plan on 3 h 30 m to 4 h 30 m without long stops. The two halves are each roughly the same as the drives from Srinagar: Gulmarg is about 1 h 30 m from Srinagar and Sonamarg about 2 h 30 m. The bypass saves you the city traffic, which is worth 20 to 40 minutes at busy times.

  • ✓Summer (April to October): 3 h 30 m to 4 h is normal. Leave Gulmarg by 9 am to reach Sonamarg for lunch and an afternoon at Thajiwas.
  • ✓Winter (November to March): allow 4 h 30 m or more. Snow on the Tangmarg road or near Sonamarg slows traffic, and daylight is short. Leave early and plan to arrive before dark.
  • ✓Weekends and holidays: traffic builds near Srinagar and at the Sonamarg end; add 30 minutes.

Can you visit Gulmarg and Sonamarg in one day?

Not comfortably. Driving 120 km between them takes most of the day on its own, and both places need time: the Gulmarg Gondola alone is two to four hours, and Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg is half a day. Trying both in one day means seeing neither properly.

There are two good ways to fit both into a trip:

  • ✓Stay in Srinagar and do two day trips. Gulmarg one day, Sonamarg another. You keep one hotel and never drive more than about 2 h 30 m each way. This suits short trips and families.
  • ✓Stay overnight in both. Go from Gulmarg straight to Sonamarg (or the other way) with a night or two in each. This gives you the quiet mornings and evenings that day-trippers miss, and the Gulmarg to Sonamarg drive becomes your transfer day.

Packages that stay overnight in both include the Premium Kashmir 7N8D with 2 nights each in Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam and the 9N10D Grand Tour. For a shorter trip based in Srinagar, the Srinagar, Gulmarg and Sonamarg 4N5D covers both as day trips. Each package page shows its current price and exactly what is included.

Private cab (recommended)

A private cab picks you up at your Gulmarg hotel and drops you at your Sonamarg hotel, with stops where you want them. A sedan suits two people with normal luggage; take an SUV such as an Innova in winter, with a family or with heavy bags. A one-way transfer between two hill stations is usually priced for the full distance plus the car's return run, so ask for a one-way quote rather than adding up two Srinagar fares. You can see our fixed Srinagar route fares on the Kashmir cabs page.

Bus or shared taxi

There is no direct bus. You would take a shared vehicle or bus from Tangmarg to Srinagar, then another from Srinagar towards Sonamarg. It is cheap but takes most of a day with luggage, and winter services are irregular.

Local transport once you arrive

Your cab can take you to Sonamarg town, but Thajiwas Glacier is reached on foot or by pony, and Zero Point is reached by local union taxi. In Gulmarg, the Gondola and ponies work the same way. These are paid locally, so keep them in your budget.

Is the Gulmarg to Sonamarg road open in winter?

Yes, weather permitting. Since the Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel opened in January 2025, the road to Sonamarg town is kept open through winter. The road beyond Sonamarg over Zoji La to Ladakh still closes for the snow months. On the Gulmarg side, the Tangmarg - Gulmarg road is cleared after snowfall, but it can be restricted to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive for a few hours or a day.

After heavy snow, either end can close briefly while the road is cleared. Keep a spare half day in a winter plan and check the morning's road status with your driver. Our Gulmarg snowfall page tracks the forecast, and the Sonamarg winter guide covers what is open there in the cold months.

Which order: Gulmarg first or Sonamarg first?

  • ✓Gulmarg first suits most trips arriving at Srinagar airport: Gulmarg is the closer of the two, and you finish at Sonamarg, which is on the way out if you continue to Ladakh in summer.
  • ✓Sonamarg first works well in May and June, when Sonamarg's meadows and glacier are at their best early in the season and Gulmarg's flowers come a little later.
  • ✓In winter, put Gulmarg where you have the most flexibility, since Gondola Phase 2 and skiing depend on the weather on the day.

For month-by-month conditions, see the best time to visit Sonamarg.
