Pahalgam is the place people mean when they say Kashmir looks unreal. The Lidder river runs green and fast through the middle of it, poplars and pines line the roads, and the side valleys open one after another into meadows that films have used for decades. Unlike Gulmarg, which is about the big set-piece of the gondola, Pahalgam rewards slowness: a morning by the river, an afternoon drive up one valley, an evening walk with the sound of water always somewhere nearby.
This guide covers the valleys worth visiting, when to come, and how to base yourself here.
Things to do in Pahalgam
- Betaab Valley: A lush meadow ringed by snow peaks, named after a Bollywood film shot here. The most popular short excursion, reached by local cab.
- Aru Valley: A quieter shepherd's valley about 12 km upriver, the trailhead for treks to Lidderwat and Kolahoi Glacier.
- Chandanwari: The starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, with snow bridges over the Lidder well into summer.
- Baisaran: A high alpine meadow above the town, often called "mini Switzerland", reached on foot or by pony.
- Lidder river: White-water rafting (grades II-III), riverside walks, and trout fishing.
- Mamaleshwar Temple: An ancient Shiva temple beside the river in the town.
Getting around Pahalgam
Betaab, Aru, and Chandanwari are reached by local Pahalgam cabs (a union system with fixed points), not your main Srinagar taxi. Plan a full day for the three valleys.

How to reach Pahalgam and where to stay
Pahalgam is about 90 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Srinagar. En route, most trips stop at the Awantipora ruins and the saffron fields of Pampore. Hotels range from riverside budget stays to full resorts with lawns and mountain views. Staying two nights lets you cover the valleys without rushing and enjoy a slow morning by the Lidder.
