Srinagar does not rush you. The whole city seems to move at the pace of a shikara being paddled across Dal Lake at dawn, the water still, the Zabarwan hills pale behind the mist. It is a city of water: the lake, the Jhelum river threading through the old town, the floating vegetable gardens that have fed it for centuries. For almost every visitor, Srinagar is both the start and the end of a Kashmir trip, and it deserves more than a single hurried night.

- Shikara ride on Dal Lake: The signature experience. Go at sunrise or golden hour, glide past the floating gardens and lotus beds, and stop at the floating market.
- Stay on a houseboat: Sleep on the water in a carved-walnut heritage houseboat on Dal or Nagin lake. At least one night is worth it.
- Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, terraced 17th-century gardens with fountains and chinar avenues framing the lake.
- The old city: Jamia Masjid with its 370 deodar pillars, the shrines, and the craft lanes selling pashmina, papier-mache, and copperware.
- Shankaracharya Hill: A hilltop temple with the best panorama over the city and lake.

How to reach Srinagar
Srinagar International Airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other metros. By road, Srinagar is connected via the Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH 44). From the airport, most hotels and the Dal Lake area are a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Srinagar is also the launch point for the rest of Kashmir: Gulmarg is about 2 hours away, Pahalgam about 2.5 hours, and Sonamarg about 2.5 hours.
