Quick Answer: The top 10 places to visit in Srinagar are Dal Lake (by shikara), Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi with Pari Mahal, Shankaracharya Temple, Hazratbal Shrine, Jamia Masjid and the old city, Hari Parbat, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden (spring only) and Nigeen Lake. You can see most of them in 2 days. A full-day Srinagar sightseeing cab costs ₹2,400 in a sedan or ₹2,900 in an Innova with Via Kashmir (October 2026 fares), and a 1-hour shikara on Dal Lake starts at ₹800 per boat.

This list is ordered the way our Srinagar drivers actually sequence a first visit, not by fame alone. Each entry says how long to give it, what it costs, and links to our full guide if you want the detail.

Gate fees at the Mughal gardens are small and are revised from time to time, so we do not print a figure we cannot stand behind. Budget a few hundred rupees per person for all garden entries combined.

1. Dal Lake

Dal Lake is the reason most people come to Srinagar. Take a shikara along the Boulevard ghats, past the houseboats and lotus beds to Char Chinar island. Go early if you can: the floating vegetable market trades around sunrise and is finished by mid-morning. A Classic Shikara on Via Kashmir starts at ₹800 per boat for an hour (up to 4 to 6 people), a decorated Flower Shikara at ₹1,200, and a full-day shikara at ₹2,999.

2. Shalimar Bagh

Built by Emperor Jahangir for Nur Jahan in 1619, Shalimar is the most formal of the Mughal gardens: a central water channel running through stepped terraces, fountains and old chinar trees. It is at the far north-east end of the Boulevard, so pair it with Nishat on the same drive.

3. Nishat Bagh

Nishat, laid out by Asif Khan (Nur Jahan's brother) in the 1630s, is the largest of Srinagar's Mughal gardens. Its twelve terraces climb from the Dal Lake shore to the Zabarwan hills, which is why the view back over the lake is the best of any garden. Full guide: Mughal gardens of Srinagar.

4. Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal

Chashme Shahi is the smallest Mughal garden, built in the 1630s around a natural spring whose water people still bottle to take home. A short drive above it, Pari Mahal is a seven-terraced garden associated with Dara Shikoh. Come in the last hour of daylight: Pari Mahal looks straight down on Dal Lake at sunset. Full guide: Pari Mahal Srinagar.

5. Shankaracharya Temple

This hilltop Shiva temple sits about 1,000 feet above the city. A road climbs most of the way, then roughly 240 steps take you to the top. There is a security check at the base, so carry as little as possible. The reward is the single best view of Srinagar: Dal Lake, the Boulevard and the old city spread out below. Full guide: Shankaracharya Temple guide.

6. Hazratbal Shrine

The white marble Hazratbal Shrine stands on the north-west shore of Dal Lake and holds the Moi-e-Muqaddas, a relic revered as a hair of the Prophet Muhammad. Dress modestly and cover your head. Friday prayers draw large crowds, so other days are easier for visitors. Full guide: Hazratbal Shrine guide.

7. Jamia Masjid and the Old City

Jamia Masjid, first built by Sultan Sikandar around 1400, is held up by more than 370 deodar wood pillars and is the heart of Srinagar's old city (Downtown). Walk on to the wooden Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum and the spice and copper bazaars around it. This is the part of Srinagar most short trips miss. Full guides: old city walking tour and wooden mosques heritage walk.

8. Hari Parbat

Hari Parbat is the fort-topped hill you can see from almost anywhere in the city. The present fort dates from 1808 under Afghan rule, while the outer wall goes back to Akbar's time. Its slopes hold the Sharika Devi temple, the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib and Gurdwara Chhatti Patshahi, three faiths on one hill. Access hours to the fort itself change, so check at the gate. Full guide: Hari Parbat fort guide.

9. Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden

Asia's largest tulip garden sits at the foot of the Zabarwan hills, between Nishat and Chashme Shahi. It opens only for the bloom, usually for about a month from late March into April, when well over a million tulips flower in terraced rows. Outside spring there is nothing to see, so plan around it rather than expect it. Best months for the whole city: best time to visit Srinagar.

10. Nigeen Lake

Nigeen (Nagin) Lake is joined to Dal but feels like a different place: fewer motorboats, fewer vendors, and houseboats with quieter views. It is the best spot in Srinagar for a sunset shikara, which starts at ₹950 on Via Kashmir. Full guide: Nigeen Lake and its houseboats.
