What Pahalgam Looks Like in November

Pahalgam in November has shed most of its summer tourist infrastructure. Many of the seasonal stalls and pony operators that serve the Amarnath pilgrimage season close by October. What remains is the base town's permanent character: the Lidder River running through the valley, the pine and fir forest on the slopes above town, and the high ridgelines that hold snow by mid-November. The Baisaran meadow above town can be accessed on foot or by pony. By November the meadow grass is past its summer green, but the fir forest and the view across to the higher peaks are still excellent. Kashmir Pulse is Via Kashmir's editorial channel -- November Pahalgam is the month the valley returns to itself after the tourist season ends.

Betaab Valley and Aru in November

Betaab Valley (15km from Pahalgam, 2,393m) is accessible by shared jeep or cab. In November the meadow is past summer colour but the mountain backdrop remains. On a weekday you may have the meadow to yourself. A local cab to Betaab and back costs Rs 500-800 in November, less than the summer fixed rate.

Aru Valley (12km from Pahalgam, 2,414m) is the trailhead for the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar lake treks. In November, the glacier treks are fully closed and upper trails snowbound. The valley itself is accessible and very quiet. The Aru River and autumn-toned birch trees at this altitude are the draw in November.
