Quick Answer

Snow sledging in Gulmarg: how sledge rides work, the best spots, season, safety for kids, and how to agree a fair price with the puller. Also Sonamarg and Pahalgam.

A sledge ride in Gulmarg is a short slide down the snow on a wooden sledge, with a local sledge puller who steers, then tows you back up or across the flat snow. It is the easiest snow activity in Kashmir: no skill, no gear beyond warm clothes, and safe for small children with an adult. Sledging runs whenever there is snow, in the Gulmarg bowl in winter and at Kongdori (Gondola Phase 1) from about December to April.

Sledges are paid directly to the puller and are not booked through Via Kashmir. The 2025-26 tourism rate list we checked does not include sledges, so the price is agreed at the spot. This page explains how a ride works, where to sledge in Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, and how to settle a fair price before you sit down.

Quick answer

What: a wooden sledge, a local puller steers and tows • Where: Gulmarg bowl and Kongdori in winter; Chandanwari (Pahalgam) snow point in spring and early summer; Sonamarg in winter • Season: December to April in Gulmarg • Price: agreed with the puller, by time or route; settle the total before you start • Own cost, paid to the puller.

How a sledge ride works

Pullers wait with their sledges at the snow points. You sit on the sledge (a child sits in front of an adult), the puller runs alongside or behind to steer down a gentle slope, then drags the sledge back up or tows you across the flat snow to the next slope. Most rides are short runs repeated over half an hour to an hour, plus photos. Ask the puller to keep to gentle slopes if you have small children.

Sledge ride price: how to agree a fair rate

Sledges were missing from the Directorate of Tourism Kashmir's 2025-26 notified rate list (notification 06/DTK of 2025), so there is no official figure to quote for this season. Earlier lists set an hourly rate. Pullers usually quote either by the hour or by a route, such as from the market to the slopes.

  • Decide how long you want (30 minutes to an hour is plenty for most families)
  • Agree the time, the route and the total for everyone before you sit down
  • Confirm whether the price is per sledge or per person
  • Pay at the end, once the agreed time or route is done

Safety and what to wear

  • Snow boots and a waterproof jacket; both can be hired in Gulmarg for about ₹120 each per day (notified rate)
  • Gloves, a warm hat and sunglasses; the glare off the snow is strong
  • Small children sit in front of an adult; keep to gentle slopes
  • Sit feet first and keep hands inside the sledge on the way down
  • Skip steep slopes near rocks, trees or the gondola line

Is sledging safe for small children in Gulmarg?

Yes, on gentle slopes with a child sitting in front of an adult. Ask the puller to avoid steep runs.

Whenever there is snow: in the main Gulmarg bowl from about December to March, and at Kongdori (Gondola Phase 1) from about December to April.

Can I go sledging in Kashmir in May or June?

Yes, at higher snow points: Kongdori in Gulmarg by gondola, and the Chandanwari snow point near Pahalgam, where snow often lasts into June.
