Some operators quote a fixed fare for a named route across the snowfield, such as towards Khilanmarg. The notified rate is per 15 minutes, so ask how long the route takes and agree the total before you sit down. A new rate list is notified each year from 1 April; we update this page when it is out.
When can you ride a snowmobile in Gulmarg?
Snowmobiles need a deep, settled snowpack, so the season depends on the winter. In a normal year rides start in late December or January, peak in January and February, and end in March as the lower bowl melts. Early December and late March are hit and miss. During heavy snowfall or whiteout, rides stop until the weather clears.
What a snowmobile ride is like
Expect speed, cold wind and a lot of spray. The operator drives across the open snow of the bowl while you hold on behind, stopping for photos with the Apharwat range behind you. Fifteen minutes is a quick thrill; 30 to 45 minutes covers more of the snowfield. Some operators let experienced adults drive on open, flat snow; ask before you agree the price.
