Most people drive through Tangmarg without stopping, eyes fixed on the Gulmarg road. A few turn off instead, towards Gogaldara, and find a different winter: a forest clearing where the snow lies untrodden, smoke rises from wooden huts, and the loudest sound is a crow. Gogaldara is one of the last villages of Baramulla district, on the edge of the forest that runs towards Budgam.
It is not a resort and has no ski lift, gondola or big hotels. That is the point. This guide explains what to expect, and how to visit without spoiling what makes it special.

What is Gogaldara like?
Gogaldara sits among mountains and dense pine and fir forest, with traditional wooden houses and huts scattered across open slopes. In winter it is blanketed in snow, and that is when most visitors come. Local reports in 2025 described a sharp rise in visitors over the previous three years, with tourists from many Indian states as well as locals from Srinagar and Baramulla.
What you do here is simple: walk in the snow, sit with a cup of tea at a stall, photograph the huts and trees, and enjoy a place where nobody is selling you a ride every two minutes. In clear weather the forest views are wide and calm.
If Gulmarg is Kashmir's winter stage, Gogaldara is the quiet room behind it, and that is how we suggest you treat it.

How do you get to Gogaldara?
- Drive from Srinagar to Tangmarg, about 39 km and roughly an hour in good conditions.
- From Tangmarg, ask your driver for the Gogaldara road; it is a smaller village road, and road works to link the area onward towards Budgam district have been under way.
- In winter, check the morning's advisory and go only with a 4x4 or a vehicle with chains after fresh snow.
- Leave by early afternoon; light fades fast in the forest and the road freezes after dark.
Exact distances and road conditions change with each snowfall, so a driver from the Tangmarg area is worth more than any map. Read our guide to driving in Kashmir in snow first.
What facilities are there in Gogaldara?
Be realistic. Gogaldara is a village, not a tourist resort. In 2025, residents themselves asked the authorities for more parking, public toilets, a tourist police post, small hotels and waste bins, and the panchayat planned garbage collection to cope with visitor numbers. Expect:
- ✓A few homestays and tea stalls run by local families.
- ✓Limited parking, which fills on snowy weekends.
- ✓Few or no public toilets; use facilities in Tangmarg before you go.
- ✓No ski hire, gondola or large hotels. For those, go to Gulmarg.
Visit kindly: carry your rubbish back with you, stay on paths near homes, and ask before photographing people or their houses. Gogaldara's welcome depends on visitors behaving like guests.
