Gulmarg's backcountry off Apharwat has a genuine global reputation among serious skiers - deep, light powder and terrain reached by gondola and, at the top end, by helicopter. This is not the beginner slope guide.
In This Article
Heli-skiing and guided backcountry off Apharwat peak are for strong, experienced skiers and riders only - not a beginner or intermediate activity. The gondola reaches close to 4,000 metres, opening huge off-piste terrain; heli days go further still. Best season is January to March, a certified guide and avalanche safety gear are essential, and pricing is on request.
This is a different guide from our general Gulmarg skiing and snowboarding guide, which covers the groomed slopes, rentals and lessons most visitors want. This one is specifically about Gulmarg's other reputation - among serious skiers, as one of the world's great powder destinations.
What the terrain is actually like
Gulmarg's gondola reaches nearly 4,000 metres at Apharwat, opening enormous off-piste bowls and tree runs well beyond the groomed pistes. Heli-skiing adds access to further, higher terrain by helicopter, on weather-dependent days. Both mean serious, ungroomed descents through deep snow - genuinely exhilarating, and genuinely demanding.
Who this is actually for
- ✓Strong, experienced skiers and snowboarders comfortable riding off-piste
- ✓A certified mountain guide is essential in this terrain - not optional
- ✓Avalanche safety gear (transceiver, probe, shovel) and real awareness are required
- ✓Heli days fly only in suitable weather, so build flexibility into your schedule
If that describes you, the groomed slopes and ski school covered in our general Gulmarg skiing guide are the right starting point - this backcountry/heli terrain is genuinely expert-only.
Season
January to March is when Gulmarg gets its deepest, most reliable powder - the window serious skiers and riders plan around.
