Quick Answer: Shallabugh Wetland is a Ramsar-listed marsh in Ganderbal district, north-west of Srinagar, covering about 1,675 hectares. From late autumn to March it fills with migratory ducks and geese from Siberia, Central Asia, China and northern Europe. Go in December to February, early in the morning, with binoculars and patience.

Most people driving out of Srinagar towards Ganderbal have no idea that the flat, reed-covered land beside them is one of the most important bird habitats in the Himalaya. Locals call it Shallabugh; the Ramsar Convention spells it Shallbugh. In summer it looks like overgrown marsh. In winter, on a still morning, the water is dotted with thousands of ducks, and the sound carries a long way.

This is a guide for travellers who want something quieter than the usual sightseeing loop, and who are visiting Kashmir in the cold months when the birds are here.

What is Shallabugh Wetland?

Shallabugh Wetland is a large freshwater marsh in Ganderbal district, protected as a Wetland Conservation Reserve and listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It was designated in 2022, together with Hygam wetland in Baramulla, and the Ramsar listing gives its area as about 1,675 hectares. It is part of the chain of Jhelum-basin wetlands, with Hokersar and Wular, that winter migrants depend on.

When do migratory birds come to Shallabugh?

Winter migrants begin arriving in late autumn as their northern breeding grounds freeze, and numbers build through December and January. As the weather turns in March, most leave the valley's wetlands. A 2017 to 2019 study of the wetland found that about 63 percent of the bird species recorded were winter migrants, and ducks of the family Anatidae were the most abundant group in mid-winter.

How many come? In 2023, J&K wildlife officials said more than 12 lakh migratory birds had wintered in the valley, with over 2 lakh at Shallabugh and more than 5 lakh at Hokersar. Numbers vary a lot from year to year with weather and water levels.

Local tip: the best light and the most activity come in the first two hours after sunrise. By late morning many birds rest out of sight in the reeds.

Which birds can you see at Shallabugh?

Expect the classic winter waterfowl of Kashmir's wetlands. Species commonly reported from the valley's wetlands in winter include mallard, common teal, northern pintail, Eurasian wigeon, gadwall, northern shoveler, greylag goose and Eurasian coot, along with resident grey herons and egrets. You will not need to be an expert: even without names, watching a flock lift off the water at once is reason enough to go.

If you only have one morning, Hokersar is the easier start; see our Hokersar wetland guide. If you have done Hokersar or simply want fewer people, Shallabugh is the one to try. For a bigger day, pair it with Manasbal Lake or read about Wular Lake.

  1. Check access before you go. The reserve is managed by the J&K Department of Wildlife Protection, and some areas may need permission; your driver or hotel can help you ask locally.
  2. Leave Srinagar before sunrise so you arrive in the first light.
  3. Bring binoculars, warm layers, waterproof boots and a flask of tea; mornings by the water are bitterly cold.
  4. Stay on the bunds and paths, keep your voice low and never chase birds for a photo.
  5. Carry all litter out with you, including food wrappers.

Is Shallabugh Wetland under threat?

Yes, and it is worth knowing before you go. Local reporting has documented falling bird numbers in some recent years, with eutrophication from fertiliser run-off from nearby orchards and farms, sewage and encroachment among the pressures. Poaching also remains a problem: in 2025, four people were arrested with live cartridges at a Ramsar wetland in Kashmir. Quiet, respectful visitors who value the birds help make the case for protecting them.

A line worth remembering: Kashmir's winter is not empty, it is simply when the valley's most travelled visitors arrive, and they come by wing, not by road.
