Quick Answer
Yes, Kashmir suits most travellers over 60. Srinagar sits at about 1,585 m, Pahalgam about 2,130 m, Gulmarg about 2,650 m and Sonamarg about 2,800 m: high enough to feel, but well below the altitudes of Ladakh. Keep to two nights per stop, drive in the morning, use cars and short walks rather than ponies, and stop at Gondola Phase 1 (about 3,080 m) rather than Phase 2 (about 3,980 m) for anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions. Srinagar has the main hospitals; Gulmarg and Pahalgam have only basic health centres.
Kashmir trips paced for families and parents
Most of the families who plan a parents' trip with us ask the same four questions: will the altitude be a problem, how much walking is there, what if someone falls ill, and how cold will it be. This guide answers each one honestly, place by place.
Altitude and walking, place by place
| Place | Altitude | Walking needed | Senior-friendly? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar, Dal Lake, Mughal gardens | About 1,585 m | Gardens have terraces and steps; shikara boarding has a step down | Very |
| Pahalgam town and Lidder riverbank | About 2,130 m | Flat riverside walks | Very |
| Betaab Valley and Aru (by union taxi) | Higher than Pahalgam | Short walks from the drop point | Yes |
| Gulmarg town | About 2,650 m | Gentle meadow walks | Yes |
| Gondola Phase 1, Kongdori | About 3,080 m | Short walk at the base; queues | With care |
| Gondola Phase 2, Apharwat | About 3,980 m | Thin air, cold, uneven snow | Only if fit and cleared by a doctor |
| Sonamarg and Thajiwas | About 2,800 m | Thajiwas is a walk or a pony ride | Town yes; glacier by pony with care |
Approximate altitudes; Baisaran above Pahalgam is closed to visitors since April 2025
Ponies are not the easy option
Pony rides look gentle but involve a mounting step, uneven trails and steep descents. For travellers with knee, hip or back problems, choose viewpoints reachable by car and a short walk instead.
A gentle 6-day plan
- 1Day 1, Srinagar: arrive, rest; an evening shikara on Dal Lake.
- 2Day 2, Srinagar: Nishat and Shalimar gardens in the morning; afternoon rest on a houseboat or hotel lawn.
- 3Day 3, to Pahalgam: a morning drive with rest stops; riverside walk.
- 4Day 4, Pahalgam: Betaab Valley by union taxi, back for lunch; a free afternoon.
- 5Day 5, to Gulmarg: meadows; Gondola Phase 1 if everyone feels well.
- 6Day 6, Srinagar and depart.
This pacing is what our Kashmir packages for senior citizens are built around: two nights per stop, short drives and a private car throughout.
Health, medicines and the cold
- See your doctor before the trip, especially for heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, and ask specifically about altitudes up to 3,000 m.
- Carry all regular medicines for the full trip plus a few days, with prescriptions. Pharmacies in Gulmarg and Sonamarg are basic.
- Srinagar has the major hospitals, including SKIMS at Soura and SMHS Hospital. Gulmarg and Pahalgam have primary health facilities; serious cases are taken to Srinagar.
- From December to February nights drop well below freezing, and the 40-day Chillai Kalan from 21 December to 31 January is the coldest spell. Choose heated rooms and carry thermal layers. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable seasons for older travellers.
- Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth it for any trip with older parents.
Comfort upgrades worth paying for
For parents, the premium choices make the biggest difference: a ground-floor or lift-access room, a heated room in winter, a hotel close to the sight rather than a cheaper one 30 minutes away, a larger car with easy entry, and a private shikara at a quiet hour. Our luxury Kashmir packages use five-star hotels in Srinagar and the best-located resorts in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with a chauffeur for the whole trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kashmir suitable for senior citizens?
Yes. Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg sit between about 1,585 m and 2,650 m, much lower than Ladakh, and the main sights are reachable by car with short walks. Plan two nights per stop and morning drives.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola safe for elderly people?
Phase 1 to Kongdori (about 3,080 m) suits most older travellers. Phase 2 to about 3,980 m has thin air and cold; skip it for anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions unless a doctor has cleared it.
How much walking is there on a Kashmir trip?
Little, if planned well. Gardens have terraces and steps, Betaab Valley and Aru have viewpoints near the taxi drop, and Gulmarg has gentle meadows. Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg needs a walk or a pony ride.
Are there good hospitals in Kashmir?
Srinagar has the major hospitals, including SKIMS at Soura and SMHS Hospital. Gulmarg and Pahalgam have only basic health centres, so carry medicines and stay within reach of Srinagar.
What is the best time to visit Kashmir with elderly parents?
April to June and September to October: mild days, cool nights and open roads. Winter is beautiful but very cold, especially during Chillai Kalan from 21 December to 31 January.
Should elderly travellers take pony rides?
Usually not. Mounting, uneven trails and steep descents are hard on knees and backs. Choose places reachable by car and a short walk.
