Not every Kashmir trip has time for Gulmarg or Pahalgam. If you have a short stopover or a work trip with a couple of spare days, here is what a Srinagar-only itinerary actually looks like.
In This Article
Most Kashmir itineraries assume you have time for at least one hill station beyond Srinagar. This one does not - it is built for a short layover, a work trip with a free weekend, or simply a first taste of Kashmir before deciding whether to come back for longer. Two days is enough to see Srinagar itself properly, without the drive time a Gulmarg or Pahalgam day trip adds.
Day 1: Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens
Morning: the Mughal Gardens - Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, both terraced Mughal-era gardens on Dal Lake's edge. Afternoon: Shankaracharya Temple for the elevated view over the city and lake. Evening: a Dal Lake shikara ride in the last two hours before sunset, when the light and water are calmest.
Day 2: Old city and the floating market
Start early for the Dal Lake floating vegetable market (runs from around 6am) if your schedule allows - it is one of the few genuinely local, non-touristy experiences that fits inside a Srinagar-only trip. Follow with a walk through the old city's bazaars around Jama Masjid and the craft shops, then Hazratbal Shrine on the lake's northern edge. See our old city walking tour guide for more detail.
Who this itinerary suits
- ✓A layover or short business trip with only a weekend free
- ✓A first, exploratory Kashmir visit before committing to a longer trip
- ✓Anyone who has already done Gulmarg or Pahalgam on a previous visit and wants to focus on Srinagar this time
If your schedule opens up, our 3-day itinerary adds a single hill-station day trip on top of this same Srinagar base.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days enough to see Srinagar?
Yes, for the main sights - Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens, Shankaracharya Temple and the old city - two days is a reasonable, unhurried amount of time.
Can I add Gulmarg or Pahalgam as a day trip to this itinerary?
Yes, but it changes the plan - a hill-station day trip adds roughly 4-5 hours of driving on top of the day's activities, so it is better treated as a third day rather than squeezed into this 2-day city plan.
