Quick Answer: A Kashmir snow forecast almost always means a western disturbance, a weather system that travels in from the west and brings rain to the valley floor and snow to the mountains. For November 2026, MeT Srinagar expects largely dry weather from 6 to 9 November, then light rain and light snow over the higher reaches on 10 and 11 November.

Every winter our phones fill with the same screenshot: a weather app showing a snowflake over Srinagar. Reading a Kashmir snow forecast is a local skill. The words the Meteorological Department uses, where the snow actually lands and how long a road stays shut matter far more than the icon on your phone. Here is how we read it before we send a car up to Gulmarg.

What is a western disturbance and why does it decide your Kashmir snow forecast?

A western disturbance is a low-pressure system that forms far to the west, over the Mediterranean and West Asia, and drifts east along the jet stream. When it reaches the Himalaya it drops its moisture. In Kashmir that means rain in Srinagar and the plains, and snow on the mountains above roughly 2,500 metres. Nearly all winter snow in the valley comes from these systems.

So snow comes in spells of one to three days, and forecasters usually see each one three to five days ahead.

What does the Kashmir forecast say for November 2026?

Speaking on 3 November, MeT Srinagar Director Mukhtar Ahmad said a weak disturbance would bring light rain and snow over higher reaches around 5 November, followed by largely dry weather from 6 to 9 November. A weak to moderate system is then expected on 10 and 11 November, with light rain in parts of the valley and the Jammu division and light snow over the higher reaches of north and central Kashmir. The India Meteorological Department's national bulletin also flags a fresh western disturbance from 10 November.

Nights are already cold. On 6 November Srinagar recorded a minimum of 4.0 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg 2.0 and Shopian 0.8, the coldest in the valley. Shallow fog is forming over the plains in the mornings, so early flights and early drives may start slowly.

  • ✓Best time to visit for snow: mid-December to February; the high slopes from late November
  • ✓Getting there: fly or take the train to Srinagar, then drive 2 to 3 hours to Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam
  • ✓Budget range: depends on hotel and cab; see live prices on our Kashmir packages page

How do you read the words in a MeT Srinagar forecast?

The Indian weather service uses fixed words for how widely rain or snow will fall. Once you know them, a bulletin reads very differently:

Forecast phraseWhat it means on the ground
Isolated placesUp to about a quarter of weather stations; most of the valley stays dry
Scattered placesAbout a quarter to half of stations
Many places / fairly widespreadAbout half to three quarters of stations
Most places / widespreadNearly everywhere, including Srinagar
Higher reachesMountains and passes: Apharwat, Zojila, Sinthan Top, Razdan, Peer Ki Gali. Not Srinagar
Light / moderate / heavyLight snow rarely closes roads; moderate can; heavy almost always does for a day or two

So "light snowfall over higher reaches at isolated places" means a dusting on the peaks you can see from Srinagar, not snow on your hotel's lawn. "Moderate to heavy snowfall at many places" is the one that turns Gulmarg white and shuts the Mughal Road.

Our rule at Via Kashmir: use the app for temperature, and the MeT bulletin for whether snow is coming and how much. The MeT Srinagar Director usually speaks to local papers every few days, and Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Life and Rising Kashmir carry the update the same day.

  1. Check the MeT Srinagar outlook five days before you fly and note any western disturbance dates.
  2. Keep your Srinagar nights fixed and treat Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam as flexible day trips or short stays.
  3. Move the hill day to the morning after a snow spell, when skies often clear and the snow is fresh.
  4. On a snow day, check J&K Traffic Police advisories before leaving; above Tangmarg only chained or 4x4 cars may be allowed.
  5. If the Gulmarg gondola matters to you, keep a spare morning: Phase 2 to Apharwat runs only in safe wind and visibility.
  6. Pack for a range: about 4 degrees Celsius at night in Srinagar now, and below freezing in the hills once a spell passes.

Our guide to driving in Kashmir in snow covers chains and 4x4 rules, and first snowfall in Kashmir explains which places turn white first.

What happens on the ground when a strong system arrives?

Roads over the passes close first. The Mughal Road over Peer Ki Gali, the Sinthan road and Zojila beyond Sonamarg are usually the first to shut after fresh snow; the Mughal Road was closed on 9 November 2023 for exactly this reason. Srinagar itself is rarely cut off in November. The city's own snow usually waits for late December or January, although 6 and 7 November 2019 brought the heaviest November snowfall Srinagar had seen since 1980.

After a spell, the valley often gets two or three clear, very cold days with sharp views of the Pir Panjal. Locals know these as the best days of early winter, and they are when we send guests up to Gulmarg.

Frequently asked questions

Will it snow in Kashmir in November 2026?

Snow is likely on the higher reaches. MeT Srinagar expects light snow over the higher reaches of north and central Kashmir on 10 and 11 November. Snow in Srinagar city in November is rare and is not forecast.

What is a western disturbance in Kashmir?

It is a weather system that comes from the west, over the Mediterranean and West Asia, and brings most of Kashmir's winter rain and snow. Each one usually lasts one to three days, and forecasters can see it coming a few days ahead.

Where can I check the official Kashmir snow forecast?

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar issues the local forecast, and its Director's updates appear the same day in Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Life and other local papers. The India Meteorological Department's national bulletin also mentions western disturbances affecting the western Himalaya.

Does 'snow in higher reaches' mean snow in Gulmarg?

Usually it means snow on Apharwat above Gulmarg and on the passes, not always on the Gulmarg meadow itself. In December and January a moderate spell normally whitens the meadow too.

Should I cancel my Kashmir trip if snow is forecast?

No. Snow is what most winter visitors come for. Keep your hill days flexible, use a local driver with chains, and plan the drive for the clear morning after a spell rather than the day it falls.
