Quick Answer: Srinagar flights in winter run every day, but snowfall and dense fog regularly delay or cancel them, mostly between mid-December and February. Snow can shut the airport for a whole day, while fog usually clears by late morning. Keep one buffer day before any onward connection, book flexible stays, and know your train and road backup.

Srinagar flights in winter are the part of a snow trip that worries visitors most, and fairly so. Every winter we watch friends, guests and relatives sit in the departure hall at Srinagar while the runway disappears under snow or a white fog settles over the valley. Most trips still go to plan. The ones that go wrong are usually the ones booked with no slack at all.

Riskiest period: mid-December to February (Chillai Kalan runs 21 December to 31 January)

Why are Srinagar flights cancelled in winter?
Srinagar's airport, officially Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, is a civil enclave on an Indian Air Force base. The Airports Authority of India runs the terminal, but the Air Force controls the airstrip and its timings. When snow falls on the runway or visibility drops below what the landing equipment allows, flights simply cannot land, however clear the sky is in Delhi.
Two things cause most trouble. The first is active snowfall, which can close operations for the whole day while the runway is cleared. In January 2022, all 40 flights scheduled at Srinagar were cancelled in one snowfall spell, with visibility below 600 metres. The second is fog. On 15 December 2025, fog alone caused four cancellations and 38 delays at Srinagar, according to local reports.
When are Srinagar flights in winter most likely to be disrupted?
November is usually calm for flying. The valley floor rarely gets heavy snow this early, though a western disturbance can bring a wet, cloudy day. This week is a good example: the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecast dry weather until around 9 November, then cloud, with rain in the plains and snow on the higher reaches from the evening of 12 November into 13 November.
The harder weeks are Chillai Kalan, the 40 coldest days from 21 December to 31 January, and early February. That is when freezing fog sits over the valley after clear, cold nights, and when the big snowfalls arrive. Our guide to reading western disturbance forecasts explains how to spot a snow spell three or four days out.
| Month | Snow risk at the airport | Fog risk | What we tell guests |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Low | Low to moderate | Normal planning, watch for western disturbances |
| December | Moderate | High after mid-month | Prefer late-morning flights, keep a buffer day |
| January | High | High | Buffer day essential, flexible bookings |
| February | Moderate to high | Moderate | Buffer day, check forecasts daily |

How to plan a winter trip around flight delays
Here is the routine we follow for every winter guest. It is simple, and it removes most of the stress.
- Book a late-morning or early-afternoon flight where you can. Fog in Srinagar is thickest at dawn and often lifts by 10 or 11 am.
- Keep one free day before any onward connection. Never fly out of Srinagar on the same day as an international flight or a separate-ticket train from Delhi.
- Book flexible rooms. Ask your hotel or houseboat for a rate that allows one extra night at short notice.
- Watch the forecast from five days out. If snow is forecast on your departure day, move your flight a day earlier rather than later.
- Keep warm layers and medicines in your cabin bag. A cancelled flight can mean hours in the terminal or a cold drive back to the city.
- Tell your driver your flight number. A local driver who watches the airline app will not leave you waiting outside in the snow.

Flight vs train vs road: which works best in winter?
When flights are grounded, Kashmir now has a real alternative. The Vande Bharat train between Katra and Srinagar, running since June 2025, crosses the Pir Panjal through tunnels, so it copes with weather far better than the old road over the pass. Our Katra to Srinagar train guide covers timings and booking.
| Flight to Srinagar | Train from Katra | Road from Jammu | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fastest | Several hours from Katra | Slowest, a full day |
| Snow impact | Cancels on heavy snow days | Usually runs | Highway can close after heavy snow |
| Fog impact | Delays and cancellations | Minor | Slow driving |
| Best for | Short trips with a buffer day | Backup when flights are grounded | Groups with their own cab |
A line we often repeat to guests: in a Kashmir winter, the flight is the fastest way in, but the buffer day is what actually saves the trip.

What should you do if your Srinagar flight is cancelled?
Stay calm and move fast. Rebook through the airline app before joining the counter queue, because seats on the next day's flights fill within the hour. If snow is forecast for several days, check the train from Srinagar to Katra and onward trains from Jammu. Then call your hotel; most Srinagar hotels and houseboats in winter will hold a room for one more night.
This is where a local team earns its keep. Via Kashmir tracks flights for every winter guest, rebooks verified hotels and houseboats on Dal and Nigeen overnight when needed, and keeps local cabs on standby for the airport or the railway station. If you want the whole trip handled, our Kashmir packages build the buffer day in from the start. Tell us your dates.
Frequently asked questions
Do flights to Srinagar operate in winter?
Yes. Flights to Srinagar operate all through winter, every day. Disruptions come on days of heavy snowfall or dense fog, mostly between mid-December and February, and most days run normally.
Which month has the most flight cancellations at Srinagar?
January usually has the most disruption, because it falls in Chillai Kalan, the coldest period, when both heavy snow and freezing fog are common. Late December and early February can also be difficult.
Is a morning or afternoon flight better from Srinagar in winter?
In foggy spells, a late-morning or early-afternoon flight is usually safer, because fog over the valley is thickest at dawn and tends to lift by mid-morning. On a heavy snow day, timing does not help much.
How much buffer time should I keep after a Srinagar flight?
Keep at least one full day between your Srinagar departure and any international flight or non-refundable onward ticket. In January, some travellers keep two days if the forecast shows a snow spell.
Can I travel to Kashmir by train if flights are cancelled?
Yes. The Vande Bharat train between Katra and Srinagar runs through tunnels and is far less affected by snow than flights or the road. It is now the main backup when the airport is shut.
