Srinagar in November is the city we locals quietly love most. The tourist rush of October has gone, the first kangris come out of storage, and the chinar leaves drift onto the Boulevard in drifts deep enough to kick through. It is not the Srinagar of postcards in full sun. It is softer, smokier and closer to how people here actually live.

What is the weather like in Srinagar in November?

Early November still feels like autumn. Days are usually bright and dry, warm enough for a sweater in the afternoon sun, while nights drop sharply. By the last week, mornings often sit around freezing and a thin frost covers the lawns of the Mughal gardens. Fog over Dal Lake is common after sunrise and usually burns off by mid-morning.

Snow in the city itself is uncommon in November, though the peaks of the Zabarwan range and the higher resorts often get their first dusting. When a western disturbance passes, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam can get snow while Srinagar gets cold rain. Our guide to western disturbances explains how to read those forecasts.

Are the chinars still colourful in November?

Yes, for the first half of the month in most years. Srinagar's chinars turn from yellow to copper through late October and usually hold their deepest red into early or mid November, depending on how early the frost comes. After that the leaves fall fast, and the city's gardens and lanes are covered in a crunching brown layer that is its own kind of beautiful.

The best places to see them are Naseem Bagh near Hazratbal, Nishat and Shalimar, the Boulevard along Dal Lake, and the old campus lawns around the city. Our chinar season guide lists the spots street by street.

Things to do in Srinagar in November

  • ✓Early morning shikara on Dal Lake: fog lifting off the water, with houseboat chimneys smoking. Wrap up; it is cold on the water until 10 am. See our shikara ride guide.
  • ✓Mughal gardens in late autumn light: Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi are quieter than at any time of year. One travel guide lists winter hours of about 10 am to 5 pm from November; confirm at the gate.
  • ✓The old city on foot: wooden mosques, bakeries with fresh girda in the morning and the smell of woodsmoke in the lanes. Our old city walking tour has a route.
  • ✓First harissa of the season: as the cold sets in, the harissa shops of downtown start their early morning pots. Our harissa guide explains where and when.
  • ✓Hari Parbat at sunset: the short climb gives a wide view over a city turning gold and grey.

What to pack for Srinagar in November

  1. A proper warm jacket, not just a fleece. Evenings and mornings are cold.
  2. Thermal inner layers, especially from the second half of the month.
  3. Warm socks and closed shoes; garden lawns are wet with dew or frost in the morning.
  4. A woollen cap and gloves for shikara rides and early starts.
  5. Moisturiser and lip balm. The air is dry once the heating comes on.

Ask your hotel how rooms are heated before you book. Our guide to heated hotels in Kashmir explains the difference between central heating, a bukhari and an electric heater.

Our view: if you want colour and calm, come in the first half of November. If snow is the point of the trip, December or January suits you better, and our Kashmir in December guide covers that.

Day trips from Srinagar in November

Gulmarg, about two hours away, is cold and quiet in November, with the gondola running when the wind allows; see our Gulmarg in November guide. Pahalgam is in its off-season, which our Pahalgam November guide covers honestly. The Sonamarg road can close for a day or two after fresh snow, so keep that trip flexible.

Via Kashmir plans November trips around the short days: early starts, drivers who know which roads are open that morning, and warm rooms at night. We arrange stays at verified hotels and houseboats on Dal and Nigeen, local cabs for day trips, and full Kashmir packages. Tell us your dates and we will build the week around the weather you are likely to get.
